Why Hunting Insurance Is So Important Leasing your land to hunters or establishing your own hunting club is a great way to allow others to take advantage of the great land you own. As a landowner, you've probably heard enough about hunting liability insurance to know that it is fairly common in this country. However, do you have insurance for your own land? If so, you are doing the right thing. If not, you need to seriously reconsider what you're doing. There are many very good reasons topurchase hunting lease liability insurance to cover your property. But the single most important reason can be summed up in a single word: liability. As a landowner or the operator of a hunting club, you are assuming a monumental risk of liability every time you allow hunters on your land. Should something go wrong, and that would not be unusual, you could be on the hook for millions of dollars.
Individual Insurance Inadequate Some landowners rely on individual hunters having their own protection by way of theirhoŵeowŶers’Under policies. normal circumstances, this would be acceptable. Homeowners insurance typically covers a policyholder for multiple types of liability as well as property damage and personal injuries that are left uncovered by health insurance. However, hunting is not necessarily a normal circumstance. According toBankrate.com, the liability coverage provided by the typicalhoŵeowŶers’is limited to between policy $25,000 and $300,000. That may seem like a lot of money, but it's not. Just the cost of healthcare delivery alone could well exceed liability limits should a hunter have an accident on your property. Moreover, if his/herhoŵeowŶers’insurance coverage will not pay the bills, you can bet he/she will go after you next. Landowners need to also consider the potential for lawsuits. Civil litigation always carries the threat of significant financial lossthe tune of millions in states in which awards are not limited. You cannot afford to take that risk.to
Other Considerations Liability and personal injuries aside, there are other things to consider for landowners who expect hunters to handle their own insurance coverage. Bankrate.com uses the example of all-terrain vehicles to explain the predicament landowners can find themselves in. Assume ahoŵeowŶer’spolicy covers the use of ATVs on land owned by the policyholder. That coverage may end as soon as the ATVs leave the owner's premises. In the event apolicyholder’sdoes not cover use of the vehicles on insurance someone else's land, you may have no recourse should hunters damage your property through the use of all-terrain vehicles. There is also the question of hunters damaging the property of your neighbors. Their homeowners policies may not cover the damage they do, and your neighbors may be unwilling to tap their own policies for fear of incurring higher rates as a result. This leaves you in the position of having to pay for the damage out of pocket. Once again, you cannot afford to take that risk. Cover Yourself As a landowner making your land available to hunters, you should investigate hunting lease liability insurance. Most policies are very affordable compared to the amount of acreage available. In addition, you can always pass the cost of insurance on to those who lease your land. Lastly, all we have explained here also applies to hunting clubs. It is important for club owners to make sure their lands are adequately covered by general liability insurance. To do otherwise is to risk serious financial loss in the event of an unfortunate accident or property damage. Consider hunting liability insurance as a very popular credit card: do not go hunting without it.
