This publication describes the methods and measurements used in the study of
duration of unemployment. This study has been undertaken for the Commission
of the European Communities by Mr. Kenneth WALSH of the Institute of Manpower
Studies (University of Sussex). It was carried out with the co-operation of
representatives of these national organisations within the member countries
involved in this field of statistics.
This study is one of a series of studies on Community labour market statistics
carried out or commissioned by EUROSTAT, the Statistical Office of the European
Communities. The publication of this series is intended to facilitate the
analysis of the labour market and to improve the comprehensibility of different
statistical compilations.

This study was prepared for and financed by the Statistical Office of
the European Communities, Luxembourg. It was written with the
co-operation of the representatives of those appropriate national
agencies dealing with the measurement of unemployment in their
countries, and their help is gratefully acknowledged.
The author is also grateful to those at the Eurostat offices in
Luxembourg who have provided valuable advice in particular on the
structure and findings of the Labour Force Survey, and to
