Ballentine's success first came as a surprise because people expected him to spend his money on cocaine, drugs, and other types of bad investments. Also, his success came as a surprise

because people expected his business to go bankrupt within the first year. (l. 7 through 11)

I.How did Jack Ballentine’s story end? Explain in your own words how people reacted, and why.

Jack Ballentine's story ended in a disaster after a deal fell apart : the building of a skyscraper (high-rise) went way over budget (they ended up spending more than they had expected) and put Ballentine's business in debt. In turn, banks stopped trusting him, which led to Ballentine's empire's collapse. People were amused by Ballentine's failure. They found satisfaction in it because they are just as fascinated with failure as they are with the American Dream itself.

J.Gitelson arrived in the USA with no foundation to stand on, made a business, failed at maintaining the business, and went back to work at a lower level job. Ballentine started out poor as well, became a huge entrepreneur, and then lost all of his worth in a single dealing.

K.Both individuals are self-made men because they had no family that was rich or successful in the USA; therefore, both men started from nothing and made themselves into something.

L.Ballentin's failure is seen as a result of faulty financial management and many Americans enjoyed watching it, while Gitelson's failure would be perceived as a highly unfortunate event that most likely related to their status as immigrants, and no one except their small community of “ship-brothers” really bothered to care.

Bien tenir compte du format de l'article : titre, nom du journaliste... On peut parler de la notion de vie privée, des paparazzi etc. Prendre un point de vue et argumenter en faveur de ce point de vue.

Sujet B Imagine the conversation between the narrator and Gitelson when they meet again in the narrator’s office.

Conversation: garder le nom des personnages et se servir du texte pour rédiger la conversation. On peut parler de :

Essay- question : Intro- Développement- Conclusion Organiser sa réponse en plusieurs paragraphes à l'intérieur du développement. « you make mistakes to learn from them » : failure is an ingredient for success. It actually has a prominent role in success because you learn from your failures, and some failures allow you to reach even higher goals. Failure is an ingredient for success provided the person is willing to work hard to get over the obstacle. If a person is not willing to work hard in order to overcome an obstacle, that person will most likely fail to succeed.
