2006 School Certificate Specimen Test

COMPUTING SKILLS

Introduction
This document accompanies the specimen test for the 2006 School Certificate test in
Computing Skills. A mapping grid is also included with the test, which describes the
foundational skills within the five skill areas that each question is targeting.

In 2006, the first cohort of students studying the revised Years 7 10 syllabuses will sit
for the School Certificate tests. The introduction of the Computing Skills test as part
of the suite of School Certificate tests has been timed to coincide with this.

The purpose of the School Certificate tests
The School Certificate credential marks the end of compulsory schooling. It records
student achievement in the courses studied in Stage 5, and provides results in five
state-wide tests in areas considered foundational to subsequent achievement. Further
information about the School Certificate can be found on the Board s Assessment
Resource Centre (http://www.arc.nsw.edu.au/).

A major purpose of the School Certificate tests at the end of Year 10 is to strengthen
the foundation skills students need to pursue further learning or to succeed in the
workplace.

The scope of the 2006 School Certificate Computing skills test
The test is based on the skills, knowledge and understandings of Information and
Communication Technologies (ICT) that students have developed through their study
of the revised mandatory Years 7 10 syllabuses during Stage 5, and through their
studies in Stage 4, including the mandatory Design and Technology course. The
Computing Skills test scope statement provides further details of the relationship
between the School Certificate Computing Skills test and the Years 7 10 mandatory
syllabuses.

The Computing Skills specimen test
The Computing Skills test is available in online and pen-and-paper forms. Schools
choose which form of the test they will offer.

This specimen test indicates the form and layout of the pen-and-paper test. The pen-
and-paper test has been designed so that the format of the questions closely resembles
the layout used in the online test.

In the Computing Skills test, there are 100 multiple-choice questions 20 in each of
the five skill areas:
- Computer operations
- Word processing
- Spreadsheets and databases
- Graphics and multimedia
- Internet and email.
The questions in the specimen test are examples of the type of questions that could be
prepared within the School Certificate Computing Skills test specifications. The
questions will be based on a representative sample of the ICT skills in the mandatory
Years 7 10 syllabuses. The mapping grid accompanying the specimen test shows how
the test samples a range of foundational ICT skills.

Schools that are considering offering the online version of the test should download
the Computing Skills Practice Test from the Schools Online section of the Board s
website. The Practice Test functions in the same way as the online version of the test,
so that students can familiarise themselves with the test layout and functionality. In
addition, students can print out their answers, which can then be marked using the
answer key provided. Further details about the online test are available on the
Computer Skills Updates page of the Board s website.

All students can practise items similar to those that will be included in the Computing
Skills test by using the online multiple-choice application on the Board s website at
http://www4.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/.
