Objective of the Developing knowledge about the banking system of CEECs and the practical
course: aspects of banking activity. The course also includes information on specific
stages of banks changes and their preparation and adaptation to market
economy. Specifically students will have a chance to investigate banking
system of an individual country and its features in economic, market and
modern environment.

Lecture 1: Introduction

Lecture 2: Polish banking system in the nineties – background
(history of reforms; milestones towards market economy)
Lecture 3: Model of the modern bank (universal bank vs. specialized bank,
transformations of banks’ organizational structures, banks’ operations)
Lecture 4: Banking system and its elements (development of the banking system, banking
system institutions, law and regulations, modern technology in financial
intermediation)
Lecture 5: a) The role of central bank in market economy based on case-study of Poland
(part 1)
(the history of central banking in Poland, central bank functions, areas of NBP’s
activities, instruments of monetary policy, the governing bodies)
b) Commercial banking (presentation and case-studies prepared by students;
afterwards the discussion moderated by the lecturer)
Lecture 6: a) The role of central bank in market economy based on case-study of Poland
(part 2)
(banking supervision, issue of currency, other activities of the NBP,
international cooperation, the NBP in ESCB)
