TO THE FOURTEENTH EDITION.
The Author of this work, grateful for the very exten-
lias met, announces to those whosive patronage it hâve
adopted it, that thirteen large éditions, amounting to
many thousand copies, having rendered the stereotyped
plates unfit for use he lias taken this opportunity for
revising work throughout; andthe having been assisted.
in this undertaking by two eminent scholars, it is pre-
sumed the présent édition will be found still more ac-
ceptable; the différent lessons having been considérée!
at times too long, they hâve been divided into short
paragraphs, and a few more notes added, which will
smooth the difficnlties which the Iearner meets with in
composing English ii>to French at Sight.
ÎSo basexpense been spared in rendering this popu-
lar work the most complète, the mest correct, and at
the same time the ch'eapest of its kind in a werd,;
worthy of the patronage cf the public.

lamentedTue Author of this work had often the
inability of masters in bringing pupils to a perfect
knowledge of his native tongue, on account of the in-
upon the Frenchadequacy of the numerous treatises
language. In the course of more than fourteen jears*
résidence in England, he had had the' opportunity of
those publications. Al-examining a great variety of
ability,though some ofthem were written by men of yet
never found any that would answer the purposehe had
which it is intended this book should be appliedfor ;
induced principally by the motive oftherefore, being
himself useful to those who are studying hisrendering
he composed this volume, which has-native tongue,
been found of the greatest assistance to students in
acquiring colloquial Frcnch, since upwards of five
copies hâve found their way into the firstthousand
metropolis, and moreestablishments near the than
*eight hundred of the présent édition (the third) hâve
