If the reproach be merited that our precediiig volume
Les Français en Ménage deals too exclusively with matters
of féminine interest, we hope Les Français en Voyage will
be accepted as une amende honorable by the stronger sex.
At the présent moment, especially, when England's
statesmen feel how urgent is the need that Englishmen
be quick and ready in their knowledge of continental
longues, it is well that our public school boys and men
should study French as a living language, rather than by
the dry bones of grammar and grammatical exercises.
We trust this little volume may be found of some help
and attraction in such studies.
May we be permitted to remark that its predecessor,
although it may at first sight appear a child's perhaps even—
a girl's—book, is hardly such in reality. The dramatis
rôles of grown-up folk inpersonae enact and carry out the
actual the letters therein contained,life—French life—and
the formulae for correspondence, etc., are those used by
men and women the varions relationships and situationsin
of everyday existence.
We feel that it is this practical knowledgevery stronglyIV PREFACE

and grammatical knowledge is, of course, necessary, but its
place is secondary, and such knowledge will be gained far
more easily and thoroughiy, if studied only after the living
