Buildings - 1 Invention and transfer of energy conservation technologies in the building sector, 1978 – 2003 This note is a technical annex to a general report on Invention and Transfer of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies on a Global Scale: A Study Drawing on Patent Data. The complete report can be downloaded at: The note describes the invention and transfer of energy conservation technologies in buildings in the world between 1978 and 2003. These technologies include elements or materials used for heat insulation, double-glazed windows and energy recovery systems in air conditioning or ventilation. The first section focuses on the number of inventions and gives descriptive statistics on the main inventor countries. Section 2 deals specifically with the international flows of technologies and investigates which countries are the main exporters and importers of energy conservation technologies. Key points • The number of annual inventions across the world has increased by 50% since 1978, but most of the increase occurred in the 1990s. 499 inventions sought legal protection in 2003. • During the 1998-2003 period, the main inventor country was by far Japan (47% of total inventions) followed by Germany and the USA (with respectively 14% and 10%). • The main recipient country is also Japan, with 31% of all patents filed between 1998 and 2003, followed by Germany and the USA.
