iiiMESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT
SAUDI COUNCIL OF ENGINEERS

Assalamulaikum,

It is well recognized that employers will rely on engineers to increase
productivity and expand output of goods and services. As a result, the
overall engineering employment is expected to grow by 10 percent per
annum over the next decade.

With the current financial crisis and expected recession, overall job opportunities in
engineering are still expected to be good, and indeed, prospects will be excellent in certain
specialties. The trend for future demand of engineers is on long-term research and
development projects or in other activities that continue even during economic slowdowns
such as in high-tech industries, electronics and aerospace. Therefore, the engineering
education is an important subject, because the value of engineers depends on their knowledge
of the latest technology.

This second Engineering Education Conference is important tool to shed the light on this
subject by presenting more than 60 papers and 25 posters. We all hope that this event will
accomplish its objectives.

Wassalam,

Eng. Abdullah Bagshan
President
Saudi Coucil of Engineers
Joint-Chairman

iv MESSAGE FROM ICEE JOINT-CHAIR

Assalamulaikum,

Madinah, by virtue a centre of education in the Islamic world, has been
chosen as a permanent venue of International Conference on Engineering
Education (ICEE) at the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Islamic
Countries’ (FEIIC) General Assembly that was held in Jeddah in 2007. . The
first International Conference on Engineering Education (known as the
Forum then) was held in Madinah between 16 and 19 May 2009. This FEIIC
conference is jointly organised by the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) and Taibah
University (TU) from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Malaysian Society for Engineering
& Technology (MySET) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) from Malaysia. The
conference theme was Engineering & Technology Education: Challenges of the Millennium.
It had managed to attract nearly 50 papers then.

Again the four organisations SCE, TU, MySET and UPM are undertaking to organise this
second International Conference on Engineering Education, themed Developing Human
Capital in Islamic Countries. This ICEE 2011 is seeing a greater participation with over 100
papers on engineering education and the related areas. We are seeing almost an equal number
of papers between the two genders.

We have also introduced an electronic poster paper session for related areas this time, as part
of our effort to reduce carbon footprint. These poster papers can also be accessed from the
MySET website and will be projected at the conference venue.

We hope that participants at this ICEE 2011 will take the opportunity to network yourselves
with the engineering education experts, and share your experiences for the sake of Allah. The
meagre knowledge that we have are meant to be shared for the betterment of the Ummah.
Before ending this message, we would like to thank the ICEE 2011 organising committee for
their untiring efforts to make this event a success. We would like to wish to all participants a
fruitful event and may Allah bless all of us.

Wassalam,

Prof Megat Johari Megat Mohd Noor
Joint-Chairman
