computer program
 You will explore the Windows Desktop,  You will also learn features of
and use the mouse Windows that allow you to start

What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic device that allows us to process information, perform
mathematical operations and store data. Most computers that sit on a desktop are called
"PCs," or personal computers.

Turning on the computer is the starting point. You will need to press the power button on the
system unit and the power button on the computer monitor. The Windows login screen or
Desktop appears. The process of turning on a computer and having the operating system
start is called booting up. It means it is getting ready to work for you. Logging on to the
computer requires you to have a username and password. Each user has a customizable
Start menu, My Documents folder, and Desktop. You can create a username for each person
in your household that uses the computer.

Hardware components of a computer system:

1. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) - this carries out all the instructions the computer has to
do. It is made up of:
a. A control unit which controls each of the steps the CPU makes as it works.
b. An ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit) which carries out the step-by-step calculations
and processing.
2. Main/internal memory - RAM (Random Access Memory) is used to store the operating
system, software, files, and data used while the computer is running. ROM (Read Only
Memory) is used to store the software used to start the hardware and load the operating
system software into RAM.
3. Input devices - these allow the input of data into the computer (i.e. a keyboard or mouse).
4. Output devices - these allow the output of information from the computer (i.e. a monitor or
printer).
5. Secondary/Backing Storage - these store data when the computer is turned off (i.e. a hard
disk).

Windows Versions

There were several Windows versions created. Windows 95 was released in 1995, followed
by Windows 98, then Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows ME, Windows XP, and now the
new Windows VISTA.

(Fill in the blank circles with the different Windows versions.)

Computer Hardware and Software

Software is the instructions or programs that make your computer do things for you. The
computer without software would be like a home entertainment system with no DVD’s, CD's,
or movies - you have the machine, but there's nothing to play on it.

Software/Programs

Software is the ___________________ or ___________________that tell the hardware
what to do.

Common Software/Programs and What They Do

Word-Writing and editing PowerPoint-Presentations, Slideshows
Excel-Electronic spreadsheet Publisher-Desktop publishing
Outlook-Email Photoshop-Photo, Image editing
Access-Database Quicken-Personal finance

parts you can touch.

Operating Systems
What is Windows?
Windows is an _____________ system. The operating system is a form of software. You
need a translation system between the hardware and the application software. This
translation system is called the operating system (OS). The Windows or Mac (OS) works
"behind-the-scenes" to run your computer. It tells the computer what to do when it starts up
and keeps track of your documents, files, and other software. It also provides the standard
user interface component (like menus and the desktop) that you see when you look at your
computer screen.
Word, Excel, PowerPoint Both the Windows and the Mac (OS) operating systems use a
graphical interface (pictures or icons instead of text) that allow you
to immerse yourself in multitasking (accessing multiple
applications and files simultaneously). You work with
“windows” in this interface. These windows are a series of boxes,
which can be opened and closed as needed. Windows is like an

the hardware at the bottom level.

Introducing the Windows Desktop
Windows Desktop-When you start your computer you will see the main screen called the
Desktop. The Desktop contains icons. Typical icons include My Computer, Recycle Bin,
Internet Explorer, and others. Other parts of the Desktop include the Start Button, Quick
Launch Buttons Taskbar, System Tray, System Time, and the mouse pointer.
Identify the parts of the desktop by filling in the boxes.

Using a Mouse
 The primary mouse button is the ____________ button.
Inside the Box (CPU)
The Microprocessor-The microprocessor is the __________ of the computer. The speed
is measured in gigahertz (GHz) (for example 3.2 GHz). The higher the number, the faster
your computer will run.
RAM-___________ _________ __________ is your computer’s workbench. Everything
you see on the screen is actually taking place in RAM. When you are typing a letter, what
you see on the screen is actually being stored temporarily in RAM.

Working with Common Program Features in WordPad
Try it out: Go to Start, All Programs, WordPad. Or double-click the WordPad icon on your
desktop. Use your mouse and point to each toolbar button to find out what they are called,
you can also use the word bank to identify each part of the WordPad window.

Word Bank: italics align right new
bold font size title bar font underline close
menu print minimize color bullets save
