LDear Parents,
We welcome you and thank you for your interest in the French International School “Lycée
Rochambeau” for your child. Our school is accredited by the French National Ministry of
Education, is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education, and operates with a
private Educational Institution License from the Maryland Department of Health and Human
Services.
The school was founded in 1955 and today is one of the largest French Schools in the United
States. The French International School is a non-denominational, coeducational day school
serving 1060 students from pre-elementary school through high school on three campuses in
suburban Maryland.
Our dynamic school community is motivated by a common will to harmoniously integrate
different cultures around a quality education and a common language. Lycée Rochambeau is
recognized for its superior academic preparation by the best Canadian, American and French
universities. Our students are admired for being well rounded individuals as well as for their
intellectual capacities and their ability to integrate and adapt to any setting.

In accordance with the by-laws and corporate charter of the Foundation, the mission
of the French International School is to:
- Offer students a French educational curriculum conforming to standards and
guidelines in effect in France, as defned by the French educational authorities, in
order to prepare students for the French Baccalauréat examination and for admission
to institutions of higher learning in France and other French-speaking countries.
- Qualify students for admission to colleges and universities in the United States and
Canada by offering a curriculum including courses focusing on the English language,
American History, and Civilization.
- Promote the diffusion of French language and culture in the context of American
society in a manner that refects the cultural diversity of the Lycée.
Criteria for admission
Students are admitted to the French International School without discrimination as to
race, creed, or national origin. Pre-school and kindergarten children must have basic
skills in a primary language and be potty trained upon entry to school. For admission
in frst through twelfth grade, students must be able to demonstrate age-appropriate
understanding and linguistic competence in French, as the language of instruction is
French. The school provides academic support for those children learning French as
a second language.
Length of the school day
Pre-elementary school : 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Lower school: 8:30 am – 3:20 pm
Middle and High school: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm
Student/Teacher ratio:
Pre-elementary: 12/1 student/teacher ratio*
Elementary: 19/1*
Middle and High school: 11/1*
*with a margin of error of 2 students
Graduation Policy
Twenty-four credits, earned from quatrième through première, are required to qualify
for a High School Diploma. Nineteen of these credits must be accumulated in the
subjects listed below. The additional 5 credits may come from course offerings in any
curricular area.
English/French Language, Arts: 8 credits
Social studies: 4 credits (one of which must be in US history)
Math and Science: 4 credits (at least one each in both math & science)
Foreign Language: 2 credit
Physical Education: 1 credit
Granting of “credit”: To receive a credit for a course, a student must obtain a yearly
grade average of at least a “D-”. The amount of credit attributed to a course is based
on the number of clock-hours of instruction given in that course during the school year.
Classes at the Lycée are 55 minutes long and last for 173 school days per year. One
credit corresponds to a minimum of 120 clock-hours of instruction.

In order to comply with regulations stipulated in COMAR 13A 09.09 and receive
approval from the Maryland State Department of Education, the French

En accord avec les statuts et la charte de la Fondation, la mission du Lycée
Rochambeau est de:
- Dispenser un enseignement conforme aux programmes défnis par le Ministère de
l’Education Nationale afn de préparer les élèves au Baccalauréat français qui leur
donnera accès aux études supérieures en France et dans d’autres pays francophones.
- Offrir un programme qui mette l’accent sur l’anglais, l’histoire et la civilisation
américaine pour permettre d’intégrer les universités américaines et canadiennes.
- Promouvoir la diffusion du français et de la culture française dans le contexte
américain de manière à mettre en valeur la diversité culturelle du Lycée.
Conditions d’inscription
Les élèves sont admis au Lycée Rochambeau sans discrimination de race, de religion
ou d’origine. Les enfants de maternelle doivent posséder au moins les notions de base
d’une première langue et avoir acquis la propreté dès l’entrée en petite section. Pour
l’entrée au CP jusqu’en terminale les élèves doivent être en mesure de maîtriser le
français, de s’exprimer dans cette langue, l’enseignement se faisant en français. L’école
donne des cours de français aux élèves dont ce n’est pas la langue maternelle.

Graduation
24 crédits, accumulés de la quatrième à la première, sont nécessaires à l’obtention du
High School Diploma. 19 de ces crédits doivent provenir des matières ci-dessous. Les
5 autres crédits peuvent provenir des autres matières enseignées.
Anglais/français/arts: 8 crédits.
Sciences éco. et sociales: 4 crédits (dont un en histoire américaine)
Maths et sciences: 4 crédits (au moins un en maths et un en sciences)
Langue étrangère: 2 crédits
Education physique: 1 crédit
