Pieter J.D. Drenth, Jens E. Fenstad and Jan D. Schiereck
On 2-3 December, 1997, a conference was held at the premises of the Royal Netherlands
Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam, entitled European Science and Scientists
between Freedom and Responsibility.
The conference was organised under the auspices of All European Academies (ALLEA), the
association of all European national academies of sciences and/or humanities, in conjunction
with the European Science and Technology Forum '.
The conference was made in collaboration with the European Commission, The Dutch
Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and
Sciences.
32 academies from 26 different European countries were represented. Several sister organi
sations, including Academiae Europaea, ESF, ICSU, the European Academy of Arts and
Sciences, Akademia Leopoldina, as well as the European Parliament and the European
Commission gave evidence of their interest by a representation.
The three editors of the text, Pieter J.D. Drenth, Jens E. Fenstad and Jan D. Schiereck, took the
final responsibility for organisation of the conference, collection and editing of the papers and
composition of the book.
Now, Euroscientia Conferences.
