Preface
The number of databases has risen sharply over the past few years,
particularly in Europe. This increase is attributable in large part to the
countries of the European Union.
In view of the large number of sources and data producers, it is not
easy to obtain the information one requires.
Through this second revised brochure, Eurostat has endeavoured to
provide an overview of the databases available in one particular field.
With the assistance of some 30 national statistical offices and
international oganizations, over 100 databases have been identified
and presented. These include only publicly accessible databases within
the field of 'official statistics'.
The information stored in the databases" covers virtually all economic
and social sectors.
Databases cannot always be accessed in all forms by different user
groups. Every effort has been made to specify as precisely as possible
via which hosts and in what form users can obtain the data they require.
This directory is intended for an international public. It aims to improve
communication and meet the requirement for information within the
European Economic Area (EEA) and the countries of central and
eastern Europe.
