Description
Substantial deposits of bovine horn-cores have been found at Levroux, as they have at numerous roman and medieval sites ; these provide the sole evidence of horn-working activity, as in this context the material itself does not survive. A study of the methods used to separate it from the core, considered with reference to modern techniques, has made it possible to assess the technical capacity of the craftsmen and the range of items produced. Archaeological analysis of these deposits has also enabled the identification of other crafts making use of animal products, such as tanning. Within the context of a wider study, the identification of these activities contributes to our understanding of socio-economic condition of sites in the process of urbanization.
