OrchidVirusDiseases Manyorchidspeciesareaffectedby some25differentvirusdiseases. The2mostimportantvirusesaffect‐ ingorchidsareOdontoglossum RingspotVirus(ORSV)andCymbi‐ diumMosaicVirus(CyMV)Oncean orchidplantisinfectedbyavirus,it cannotbecured.Itshouldbede‐ stroyedimmediatelytoavoidthe virusspreadingtootherorchids.

Oncidiumleaves with symptoms ofORSV. Orchidplantsinfectedwithviruses growmoreslowly,maybecome stuntedandtakelongertoproduce flowers.Theflowersmaybediscol‐ oredordeformedandsmaller. Plantswithvirusinfectionsmayde‐ velopveryunsightlysymptoms.In‐ fectedplantsarealsosusceptibleto otherdiseasescausedbybacteria andfungus.Virusdiseasesarecon‐ tagioustootherorchidsandtocer‐ tainotherplants,althoughnotto humansoranimals.

Symptomsofvirus infectioncanvary. Becauseorchids growsoslowly,they canbeinfectedfor sometimewithout anyvisiblesymp‐ toms.Assoonas youseesuspect symptomsona plant,separateit fromtheother plantsandhaveit tested.Infected plantsshouldbede‐ stroyedatonce.If youhaveinfected orchidsinyourcol‐ lection,youmay Oncidium needtotestallyour leaves with plantsinorderto symptoms of eliminateallin‐ ORSV. fectedones. Virustestingoforchidplantscanbedone foranominalfeeatthePlantPathology Lab,UniversityofGuam.Orchidscanbe testedforCyMVandORSV.Nurseriesmay choosetodotheirowntesting.ThePlant PathologylabatUOGwillgladlyassist nurserymenwithtrainingandinobtaining commercialtestingkits.
