Djembe Percussion Corps - An Afterschool Matters Program

For a second year, the LifeVine Works Djembe Percussion Corps (DPC) served as a program for Mayor Daley’s After School
Matters (ASM) program, via a contract with the City of Chicago. LifeVine Works (LV) provides education in the areas of the
arts and sciences to youth on Chicago’s Westside. This document serves to demonstrate the goals reached in its Fall 2011
“Jazmine’s Dream – A Kwanzaa Tale” program at Austin Business Entrepreneurship Academy in Chicago.

To provide creative environments that will 1) inspire learning and 2)
serve as a reliable outlet for self expression and personal growth, via
arts and science programs that support young people in a number of
key ways:

•Ownership - we’ve built projects that youth can own, providing them
with voice and responsibility.

•Mentorship & Expert Instruction - for strong character building and
as a source of motivation.

•Exposure to Opportunities - to build confidence, experience and skill

•Parental Relationship Building - parental volunteerism to build

• Introduce a different aspect of the African Diaspora: A Kwanzaa-themed multi-media performance
• Continue to:
• serve the needs of youth by implementing the Djembe Percussion Corps African percussion and dance
curriculum as an in-school advanced program
• Increase the number of experiential learning opportunities for youth
• Grow the relationship between parents and LifeVine Works

• Secure an 10-week advanced apprentice contract with After School Matters as a program provider
• Explore the history, culture and traditions of Kwanzaa via audio-visual journeys on-site and via the LifeVine
Works website
• Solidify relevant field trips that serve as performance/collaboration opportunities
• Partner with new community stakeholders in order to secure resources in the areas of program enrollment,
performance space and other necessities (i.e. Austin Business & Entrepreneurship High School)
• Increase social networking activity on YouTube, Twitter & Facebook

LifeVine Works successfully met the following milestones and challenges during its fall contract execution:

New Partnership Development – with community and business stakeholders, such as…
•Austin Business & Entrepreneurship Academy – One of three schools housed in the Chicago Public Schools’ Austin
High School campus. This west side school’s focus is fostering excellence in the areas of business administration and

•LV secured a year-round municipal contract to administer the DPC program to apprentices who were paid a post-
program award for their diligent participation. LV was also able to secure the necessary equipment and supplies,
such as djembe drums, space, costumes and transportation.

•Came in under budget at the close of the program through diligent forecasting and accounting.

•Fostered continued credibility as a viable non-profit youth organization, able to meet the needs of an underserved

•Experiential Curriculum
The DPC participated in field trips and an end-of-program performance that
further exposed them to the African diaspora and provided performance
Field Trips
Field trip to the Lou Conte Dance Center to assist Master Djembe Instructor Aly Mbaye in teaching adults the djembe.
Students observed the difference in instructional technique when communicating concepts to older students.
Field trip to AfriWare Books & Gifts to participate in a drum circle to learn drum theory with Master Djembe Instructor
Baba Atiba. Students also learned about the business of running a culture-centered retail establishing (marketing and
inventory) in a Q&A with store staff.
Regional Showcase
 The DPC participated in the Region 3 final showcase at Austin Business Entrepreneurship Academy in their production
of “Jazmine’s Dream – A Kwanzaa Tale”. It consisted of a live costumed dance and drum presentation with a 7-minute
film short. The film depicted the life of Jazmine, an overlooked and often-for-gotten about 16-yr-old on Chicago’s
Westside who learned how use the 7 African Principles/Nguzo Saba, to transform her life of poverty and complacency.

312/402-5158 Apprentice Ownership & Performance

Teens earned 3 hours of community service credit by:
 serving as assistant teachers during the Lou Conte field trip for a class of adult
djembe students
 discussing researched information on non-profits whose work creates
entrepreneurship opportunities and basic human services to people in third
world nations. Youth also made a monetary donation to World Vision, the
cause organization of choice.
Teens gave $50 donation to World Vision in the effort to feed hungry
children in Africa. This was done in the spirit of Kwanzaa and the
principle of Ujima, which is collective work and responsibility.

 Youth produced a podcast/video broadcast via social media that communicated
the 7 African principles of Kwanzaa to a community of parents, teens and
educators via Facebook and YouTube:
 Youth were challenged with learning 3 different African djembe rhythms, 2 dance
sequences and 2 songs.
 An alumna from our successful summer program was instrumental in
communicating the DPC fundamentals and in exampling standards of
leadership. This further substantiates the value in peer mentorship.
 Apprentices memorized new ensemble chants for motivation and to encourage
bonding. Some were:

“DPC code: one sound, one drum!”
“Open and available – in the moment, yebo*!” (yebo means “okay”, “yes”)
“DPC Platform– discipline, commitment, purpose, djembe!”

Apprentices received a rich cultural experience of hand percussion and dance from
the African diaspora from instructors actively working on local and national levels.
