Developments for labour input indicators during the first quarter of 2001 ········ Statistics Gunter Schäfer The index of employment for total industry (excluding construction) in the EU in focus rose by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2001 compared to the quarter before, whilst the corresponding rate for the euro-zone1 was 0.3%. There was a high increase in the number of hours worked in the euro-zone, up by 1.8% between the final quarter of 2000 and the first quarter of 2001. Wages and salaries grew by 1.5% in the EU in the first quarter of 2001 compared to the INDUSTRY, TRADE final quarter of 2000 and by 1.7% in the euro-zone.
