THE GDP OF THE CANDIDATE COUNTRIES Silke Stapel Statistics Figures for the third quarter of 2000 In this publication, Eurostat presents the latest quarterly GDP growth rates for in focus the Candidate Countries (CCs). The CCs comprise Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Turkey. The most recent data published relate to the third quarter of 2000, and were submitted by the CCs before 31 ECONOMY AND January 2001. FINANCE Annual figures for 1999 are also shown, though more detailed breakdowns 4 and analysis can be found in Statistics in Focus no. 27/2000 (Theme 2). THEME 2 - 5/2001 Table 1 (overleaf) illustrates the quarterly growth figures back to the second quarter of 1999. The trend for the CCs as a whole is shown below in Figure 1, along with a comparison against the EU-15. NATIONAL ACCOUNTS The growth rates are based on changes between corresponding quarters in Contents successive years. In the third quarter of 2000, GDP growth in the CCs as a group (both CC-11 and CC-13) continued to slip gradually from the 5% high in the first quarter, but still did not drop below the EU-15 average. Malta saw its DP Annual and quarterly GD growth bounce back to former high levels, with Lithuania, Slovenia and Turkey growth rates 2 also showing sharp improvements.
