The task of Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European
Communities, is to provide the Commission and all the citizens
of Europe, via the European statistical system, with the
statistical information that is essential for understanding
European society and for taking decisions.
In order to make this statistical information available to as
wide a public as possible, Eurostat disseminates general
publications, specialized statistical documents, CD-ROMs and
electronic products.
The aim of this 30th edition of Basic statistics of the Community
is to meet the needs of all those who would like to get to know
the Community better.

In this publication, data with monetary values are generally expressed in European currency
units, ecus.
The ecu is a 'basket' unit, based on the market exchange rates of a certain quantity of each
Community currency.
It must be emphasized that the monetary parities do not reflect the relations between the
domestic purchasing powers of the currencies. For this reason a comparison of the values in
ecus of the individual countries cannot be regarded as providing a measure of the differences
in real levels between countries. In order to take this phenomenon into account, some figures,
especially data on per capita GDP, are given in a unit (PPS = purchasing power standard)
which cancels out differences in price levels and can be used to make comparisons in real
terms. The last price survey taken as the basis for calculating the PPS contained in this
publication was carried out in 1990; the results were extrapolated back to 1960. For this reason
(and also due to the change of reference year for the numéraire, which is now 1990 instead of
1975) the data on PPS in this publication are no longer comparable to those of previous
publications.
As far as the sources of the data are concerned, it should be noted that, except where
otherwise indicated below the table in question, data relating to Community Member States
come from Eurostat publications; those concerning third countries are generally taken from
publications of the United Nations Statistical Office or of the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) and from national statistical yearbooks.
For technical reasons the Continental practice of using a comma to represent a decimal point
