ISSN 1010-2779 Consumer price index PRICES: Significant increase for EUR-12 in January (+ 0.5%) Annual inflation rate 5.6% Substantial rises in a number of Member States pushed up the CPI for the EC as a whole by 0.5% between December and January. The biggest rise was recorded in Spain (+ 1.2%), mainly due to the increases for housing, medical care and transport. Marked increases were also reported from Portugal (+1.0%),Belgium (+0.8%),Italy (+0.7%) and Germany (+0.6%). The CPI's for France and Luxemburg were not available at the closing date of this bulletin. Eurostat estimates the increases for both countries at 0.4%. The United Kingdom recorded a modest increase of 0.2%, whereas the CPI's for Denmark and the Netherlands remained unchanged between December and January. Finally, the CPI for Greece shows a decrease (- 0.2%) thanks partly to the seasonal effects of the winter sales.
