RAPID REPORTS eurostat Population and social conditions 1991 D 3 ISSN 1016­0205 A EUROPEAN COMMUNITY WITH A POPULATION OF 345 MILLION On 3 October 1990, the former German Democratic Republic became part of the European Community, and with this the area of the Community increased by 108 000 krrr and its population by 16 million. With a total population of 345 million at 1 January 1991, the Community remains the third largest in the world, although the gap has now widened with the USSR (289 million), the United States (249 million) and Japan (123 million). This report takes account of the Community's new boundaries, and gives an indication of the contribution made by the former GDR. Since the six­member Community ZZ2ZÌ GH 77771 was established by the Treaty of Rome on 1 Β 77771 January 1958 its population has increased by DK 175 million (G 1). IFU.
