main chamber pressure
(vs. ambient) is positive to
the room. The main cham-
ber is slightly more positive than the pass-thru interchange
to assure clean conditions in the main chamber.
The glove box has a slanted viewscreen formed of
shatterproof acrylic plastic and angled at 10° for optimum
ergonomic comfort and safety.
A viewscreen top hinge allows full opening for initial
loading of instrumentation or equipment.
Round gloveports offer maximum reach to interior sur-
faces for users of all heights.
Three neoprene glove positions (left,
ambidextrous, right) allow total access to
the chamber.
A spacious, positive-pressure inter-
change allows easy transfer of materials in
or out of the chamber.
Cabinet Containment & Product
Protection
The glove box main chamber pressure
(vs. ambient) is positive to the room. The main chamber is
slightly more positive than the pass-thru interchange to
assure clean conditions in the main chamber.
Baker Company UniPressure™ PreFlow filter configura-
tion creates internal unidirectional airflow from top to bottom
for uniform "piston effect" to sweep particulates from the
work area to the HEPA filter. The filter cross-section covers
the work area.
Front-loading HEPA supply filter is 99.99% efficient;
provides
better than
Class 100 air within the main chamber.
Unidirectional (downflow) airflow removes airborne
particulates from the work area.
Stainless steel air diffuser in the main chamber and
interchange offers additional filter protection.
Construction
A telescoping stand adjustable to either 30" or 36"
work surface height is standard. An optional electric-over-
hydraulic ergonomic lift system is available and requires a
separate power supply.
The interior back wall is vertical for maximum use of
interior space.
Back and side walls are one-piece stainless steel interior,
polished to a non-glare, easy-to-clean finish. Separate work
surface tray is removable.
Exterior, scratch-resistant PermaWhite™ baked enamel
finish for resistance to harsh laboratory environment.
Interior surfaces of the main chamber and interchange
can be exposed for initial and/or periodic cleaning and
decontamination by opening the front viewscreen.
An adjustable, two-position IV bar allows
hanging of IV bags.
Interchange
The outer interchange door with clear
view is left-hand swing. The door seals
against the peripheral gasket to maintain
internal positive pressure. This door is
opened only when the interchange door
is closed.
The internal pass-thru interchange door
is vertical lift for zero clearance for easy transfer of materials
in or out of the positive-pressure work area. This door is
opened only when the outer door is closed.
Controls
The microprocessor controller with touchpad membrane
control offers simple, reliable operation.
StediVOLT™ speed controller automatically compensates
for line voltage fluctuations to maintain constant motor
velocity. StediVOLT™ permits manual adjustment to
compensate for filter loading.
Independent magnehelic gauges provide visual
confirmation of positive pressure for interchange and main
work area. Side-by-side gauges assure main work area
pressure is more positive than interchange pressure.

The new SterilGARD
®
303 biological safety cabinet is
similar to The Baker Company’s popular 4- and 6-foot
SterilGARD
®
III Advance™ models but has an added
bonus: a space-saving footprint. The 36” (nominal) cabinet
features the performance, accuracy and efficiency of the
4- and 6-foot models, while fitting into the smallest of
laboratories. At 36" W x 31" F-B, the SterilGARD
®
303
makes the most of precious laboratory space.
Like the 403 and 603 models, the SterilGARD
®
303
offers an adaptive ergonomic design combined with a
unique airflow management system and proven contain-
ment technology to improve comfort, increase productivity
and reduce the cost of ownership.
SterilGARD
®
303 Features
The slanted viewscreen is sloped 10° to create the most
natural head and elbow position when working, minimizing
arm extension required to reach the work surface and
reducing glare.
The eye-level control panel is positioned to face down
toward the user for greater visibility and easier access.
Reduced front grille depth and slim-profile lower plenum
combine to move the work surface closer to the user.
Baker’s UniPressure™ PreFlow Plenum design appor-
tions and distributes air across, then through the HEPA
supply filter, improving downflow uniformity, extending
useful filter life and reducing noise.
Supply and exhaust HEPA filters are rated at 99.99%
minimum efficiency in capturing 0.3 micrometer
particulates.
A large, easy-to-read magnehelic gauge confirms
cabinet operation.
A microprocessor controller with touchpad membrane
control panel simplifies operation; controls are more
reliable, easy to use and to clean.
High-velocity return air slots located along the side walls
of the work area and along the top of the viewscreen
maximize the biological safety cabinet protective
capabilities by preventing the escape of particulates.
Baker’s exclusive momentum air curtain
contains particulates within the work area and inhibits
migration of room air into the work area.
Includes one petcock standard with one blanked off for
future use.
Single 115V duplex electrical outlet mounted in the
center of the rear wall.
SterilGARD
®
303 Offers Compact Design
The SterilGARD® 303 offers space-saving benefits while
maintaining the quality and standard features available in a

Vice President of Operations Scott Semle, who has
worked at The Baker Company for a little more than three
years, has seen the Baker team develop innovative prod-
ucts and explore new
markets. Manager of
Sales Administration
Cliff Colby interviewed
him recently about his
thoughts on Baker’s
future, his personal
interests and family life.
Q.
Are you a native Mainer?
A.
No. I was born in South Carolina and have lived in
various states, including Wisconsin, Massachusetts,
Connecticut and Maine, during the past 20 years. I also
spent four years studying at the University of Maine
at Orono.
Q.
What brought you to Baker?
A.
My previous employer decided to consolidate its man-
agement team in Chicago. I decided that I had no interest
in taking my family out of Maine. I was looking for a
Maine-based company that could benefit from my experi-
ence and had a strong potential for growth. Baker was
a perfect match.
Q.
What experiences, both professionally and person-
ally, have helped you at Baker?
A.
I have a very broad range of manufacturing, engineering,
materials, product design and general management experi-
ence that is directly applicable to what we do here at
Baker. There are very few problems that I have not encoun-
tered to some degree in the past. I benefit from the com-
bined successes of thousands of employees with whom
I have had the privilege of leading and working.
Q.
What are your plans for The Baker Company?
A.
Over the past three years, we have eliminated our deliv-
ery problems, shown strong growth in sales and profitabili-
ty, invested in state-of-the-art equipment and seen a great
improvement in morale. We’ve positioned ourselves for
continued improvement through new products and new
markets. My goal is profitable growth, which will double the
size of The Baker Company in the next five years.
Q.
What has been your greatest challenge?
A.
Managing a career that has included weekly travel,
overseeing manufacturing facilities and thousands of
employees while maintaining a close-knit family environ-
ment at home. It was achieved by having a supportive,
stay-at-home wife who has managed the household and
family finances, along with many red-eye flights from
various parts of the country.
Q.
Tell me about your family.
A.
My wife, Debra, and I have been happily married for the
last 21 years. We have three sons, Eric, Aron and Evan.
We live in the middle of a 100-acre woodlot that we man-
age for firewood and lumber. Our free time is spent running
to soccer matches, baseball games or track meets.
Q.
What types of personal activities do you enjoy
throughout the year?
A.
I run 16 to 18 miles a week and lift weights to stay in
shape. In the summer, my family spends time at our camp
where we fish, kayak and water ski. This past summer,
I took up rowing and bought a rowing shell. In the fall, we
hunt on our property for deer and partridge. In the winter,
we cross-country ski, snowshoe and do a little ice fishing.
We also go on day hikes at some of the mountains in
Maine and New Hampshire. If you like the outdoors and all
four seasons, Maine is heaven on earth.
Q.
I understand you often shoot target practice at
lunch. How, if at all, does this reflect your attitude
toward your work and goals?
A.
I have been a shooter for many years. I started my
career working for Smith & Wesson. Shooting is like bowl-
ing, golf or any other sport that requires eye-hand coordi-
nation. If you are going to be successful, you have to be
able to focus all of your concentration on the target. You
must be able to eliminate all distractions and get the job
done. If you can do this, on the range or on the job, you’ll
achieve your goals and be successful.
Q.
How do you maintain a positive disposition?
A.
Anger is caused by uncontrolled stress. Stress can
come from not knowing what’s going on or where you’re
going. At work, I make sure I know what we’re doing and
where we’re going. I also know that everyone at Baker is
doing their best to make us a world-class company. Given
the results of the past few years, I certainly don’t have
anything to get angry about!
