Printed in the FR of Germany Introductory note
The three Treaties establishing the European Communities (European
Coal and Steel Community, European Economic Community and Euro
pean Atomic Energy) were last amended by the Single
pean Act, which came into force on 1 July 1987.
The Single Act, which contains provisions amending the original Trea
ties and new Treaty provisions on European cooperation in the field of
foreign policy, is reproduced in this third* abridged edition of the Treaties,
compiled by the Commission on the basis of the official texts currently in
force.
This abridged version, published in Danish, Dutch, English, French,
German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, contains only the texts in
most general use and therefore does not include:
(i) most of the annexes, protocols and other associated texts;
(ii) other instruments amending or supplementing the original Treaties
whose content is incorporated in the Treaty texts as printed in this edi
tion.
For the reader's information this edition also includes :
(i) a list of supplementary instruments, which shows when the successive
amendments to the Treaties were actually made;
The first abridged edition was published in 1979, the second in 1983. (ii) a list of instruments concerning the accessions to the Communities;
(iii) the table of contents of the unabridged 1987 edition.
In accordance with Article 3 of the Single European Act, 'European
Parliament' has been substituted for 'Assembly' as appropriate.
