Instant-Activity Kits
Classroom Suite
includes 30 instant-activity kits. Each
kit includes an Activity ready for students to use, a
Template ready for teachers to create additional similar
activities quickly, and a PDF file of this tutorial.
Easy Paint
The Easy Paint instant-activity kit includes the Easy
Paint Underwater activity, the Easy Paint Template, and
a PDF file of this tutorial. You can find these
components by opening the Productivity Templates
folder and then the Easy Paint folder in the New area of
Classroom Suite
.
The Easy Paint Template enables you to create simple
coloring activities for students. The activities are
suitable for young students, including switch users.
The template includes six different backgrounds
(Desert, Mountain, River, Space, Seashore, City street)
and a variety of clip art for animations, so you can
create many customized
coloring diagram activities for
your students.
In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Easy
Paint Underwater activity. Later in the tutorial, you will
learn to create customized coloring diagram activities,
using the Easy Paint template.
Universal Design
The activities you create using the Easy Paint Template
and
Classroom Suite
are designed for all students,
including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Introduction
Create a Folder for Your New
Activities
When you use this template, you will be creating new
activities for your students to use. To organize these
activities, you will want to create your own folder in the
Activities area of
Classroom Suite.
1. At the Navigation Screen, click the Activities
button. Click the New Folder button on the right
side of the screen. A dialog box will ask you to
name the folder. Give it the name of one of your
classes (e.g., Mrs. Smith’s Class).
2. Open the Easy Paint Template (page 3).
3. When you complete your work with the template
and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As
Activity dialog box appears. Name your new
activity, select the folder in which you want to place
your work, and click OK. Your new activity will now
be available for you to assign to students.
This tutorial requires that you have installed

Part 1: Exploring the Easy Paint Underwater Activity
Opening Coloring Ant Colony
1. Sign in to
Classroom Suite
as a Teacher (see
Getting Started in the
Classroom Suite
binder). The
Navigation Screen displays.
2. Click the New button, if it is not already selected.
Open the Productivity Templates folder.
3. Open the Easy Paint folder and open Easy Paint
Underwater.
Exploring Easy Paint Underwater
Students use the paint tools of
IntelliPics Studio 3
to
color a diagram of an underwater scene. Easy Paint
Underwater is a simple cause and effect coloring
activity that is suitable for young students, including
switch users.
1. The Easy Paint Underwater activity opens with a
line drawing of an underwater scene, ready for a
student to fill it with color.
2. Click the picture of the underwater scene once.
Notice that the sea floor is painted.
3. Click the picture of the underwater scene again.
The kelp in the center is filled with green.
4. Click the picture again. A plant is painted blue.
5. Continue clicking until the whole underwater
scene is filled with color.
6. A final click causes a stingray to appear in the
background and swim to the front of the painting.
7. Click the Play IntelliMation item to see the
animation again.
8. Select the yellow Repeat Activity button to start the
activity over again from page 1.
9. Close this activity without saving it.
The Coloring Science Diagrams instant-activity
kit provides similar coloring activities. It
contains the Coloring Ant Colony activity and the
Coloring Diagrams Template. This instant-activity
kit is found in the Science Templates folder in the
New area of
Classroom Suite
.
In the next part of this tutorial, you will use the Easy
Paint Template to create additional coloring activities.
Note
The Easy Paint Template enables you to create simple
coloring activities that feature science diagrams. The
activities are suitable for young students, including
switch users. The template includes six different
diagrams and a variety of clip art for animations, so you
can create many customized coloring activities for your
students.
Using this template, you will choose a background,
make individual pages with the background
progressively colored in, and create a simple animation
for the completed picture.
Opening the Easy Paint Template
1. At the Navigation Screen, click the New button.
Open the Productivity Templates folder.
2. Open the Easy Paint folder. Open the Easy Paint
Template.
3. The Easy Paint Template displays. Notice the tool-
bar at the top, the maroon instructions below the
toolbar, and the diagram toolbar at the right.
Selecting a Diagram
1. Select one of the backgrounds in the toolbar at the
right of the page. Click the Beach background to
insert it on the page.
2. If you want to change your selection, click another
background on the toolbar to replace the
previously selected background.
3. See the instructions on page 1 of this tutorial to
learn how to create a special folder to store the new
activities you make with this and other templates in
Classroom Suite
.
4. From the File menu, select Save As Activity. Save
your activity with a unique name, like Easy Paint
Beach. It will be saved into the Activities folder.
5. Click the Paint Button in the upper left corner of
the screen to access the paint tools in
IntelliPics
Studio 3
. Notice that the toolbar of backgrounds
disappears and two new painting toolbars display
on the left and bottom of the screen.
6. You have just created the opening page for your
coloring activity. Because it is the first page a
student will see, leave it empty of color.
In the next part of the tutorial, you will create a series
of partially colored versions of this picture.

Duplicating a Page
Now you will create a series of pages that are
progressively more filled with color.
1. Duplicate Page 1 by clicking the orange Duplicate
Page button at the top of the page.
2. Notice that the status bar in the bottom right now
says Page #2 of 2.
Adding Color to a Page
In order to make this template easier for you to use, the
Fill tool is preselected for you.
1. Choose a color from the toolbar of colors displayed
at the bottom of the page.
2. Notice that your cursor looks like a paint bucket.
Move your cursor to a section of the picture that
you want to fill with this color.
3. Click the area of the picture you have chosen, and
that area will fill with the color you selected.
Making More Pages
1. Duplicate Page 2 by clicking the orange Duplicate
Page button at the top of the page.
2. Notice that the status bar at the bottom right now
says Page #3 of 3.
3. Choose a different color from the toolbar of colors
displayed at the bottom of the page.
4. Move your cursor to a new section of the picture
that you want to fill with this color. Click the area
you have chosen and that area will fill with color.
5. Continue duplicating pages and filling areas with
color until the picture has been completely filled
with color.
Note: remember to duplicate the page every
time you finish adding a new color to your
activity.
6. When you have completely filled the picture,
duplicate the completely colored page.
In the next section of this tutorial, you will add an
IntelliMation to this duplicated page for the finale of the
activity.
If you are using the full version of
IntelliPics Studio 3
(not the
Player
version)
,
you can add an IntelliMation
(an animation sequence) to this activity.
Part 2: Using the Easy Paint
Template
Note
5
Using the Animation Time Line
1. Click the Design button at the top left of the page
to return to Design mode.
2. The Create IntelliMation button will display at the
top right of the page. Click this button. The
IntelliMation time line displays. You will use this
time line as you create an animation sequence.
Notice that two new toolbars display.
3. On the right is a toolbar of objects appropriate to
the chosen background. The specific items in this
toolbar will vary, depending on which background
you have chosen.
4. Click one of these objects (the hermit crab, in this
example) to place it on the page.
5. On the left is a toolbar of Transform tools that
enable you to rotate, shrink, enlarge, or flip the
object(s) you have chosen to animate.
6. With the object selected, click one of the
Transform tools. In this example, click Flip
Horizontally to change the direction the hermit
crab is facing. If you like, you may also change the
size of the object, to make it fit better in the picture.
7. Next, click the 0.5 second mark on the time line.
Move the object to a new position on the page.
8. Click the 2 second mark on the time line. Move the
object to a new position on the page. Change the
size or direction, if you wish.
9. Continue to click new time points and move the
object.
10. If you want to add more time to your animation,
select Next 5 Seconds from the IntelliPics Studio.
Then continue your animation.
11. Click the arrow at the end of the time line to
preview your animation.
12. If you want to remove time line points or change
your animation, click the Erase button at the right
of the time line. It will remove the points one at a
time, starting from the end of your sequence.
13. When you are satisfied with your animation, click
the Create IntelliMation button again to remove the
time line.
In the next section of the tutorial, you will prepare the
activity for student use.
Part 2: Using the Easy Paint Template
Easy Paint Tutorial
Note
Simplify the Page for Student Use
You have just created an activity that will work as if by
magic. Good magicians always hide their tricks. In this
case you will want to hide the toolbars of tools you used
to create the activity, so students can focus on coloring
the picture.
1. Click the purple Finish Activity button at the top
right of the page.
2. Click Replace when you are prompted to replace
the existing version of the activity.
3. Finish Activity will remove the authoring toolbars,
returning your new activity to Page #1.
4. Notice that a new toolbar displays at the top of the
page. The yellow Repeat Activity button enables
students to repeat the Easy Paint activity as many
times as they wish. Clicking this Repeat Activity
button returns the student to Page #1 and restarts
the activity.
5. Upon arriving at the the final page of the diagram,
the Play IntelliMation button allows students to re-
play the animation as many times as they wish.
6. Close the activity.
Congratulations! Your
activity is ready for students to
use. You can repeat the steps on pages 2–5 of this
tutorial to create a large variety of additional coloring
activities.
The next two pages of this tutorial provide additional
information about how this template was constructed.
They also include tips on customizing the template
even further.

Part 2: Using the Easy Paint Template
Adding a New Diagram
You can use different pictures than the ones provided
in this template.
1. Open the Easy Paint Template again (see page 3).
2, Press
[Ctrl]
and simultaneously click any button
on the toolbar (
[Ctrl]+click
). The Button
Properties dialog box displays.
3. To add a picture from the Picture Library, click
the Insert Picture From Library button. Use the
Category drop down list to locate a different
diagram in the Picture Library.
4. Select the Coloring Book category and then
select a new picture. Click Insert and OK to put
your selected picture into the toolbar.
5. Alternatively, click the Insert Picture from File
button. Then navigate to a picture you wish to use
that you may have stored elsewhere on your
computer, or on another CD.
6. When you locate the picture you want, select it
and click OK. It will insert in the toolbar.
Adding New Objects to Animate
It is possible to use your own pictures of objects to
animate, rather than using those provided.
1. Click the Create IntelliMation button. The toolbar
of objects available to animate will appear at the
right of the page.
2.
[Ctrl]+click
one of the objects provided. Do NOT
select any animated object (see the Tooltips to
identify animated objects). The Button Properties
dialog box displays.
3. Use steps 2–5 above to add new pictures.
4. Proceed with the steps in on pages 3, 4, and 5 to
create your custom coloring page. Be sure to save
each new activity with a distinctive name.
Important!
Be sure that any picture you select
has only a small number of areas to fill, to keep
the activity short. The areas should be large
enough to be easy for you to fill with the paint
bucket. Also, test any picture you select for
breaks in the lines, as the color will “leak”
through an area that is not completely closed.

Part 3: Customizing the Easy Paint Template
Note
Transparent Buttons
Part of the magic that makes this template work for
students is the use of transparent buttons. The
following section of this tutorial will explain how this
works, in case you want to use this technique in other
activities you create.
1.
IntelliPics Studio 3
includes the capability of
placing Page Buttons on the page. Buttons can
perform a variety of actions, such as causing a
sound to play, navigating to a new page in an
activity, or even opening an Internet browser and
going to a specific Web site.
In this activity, all pages are completely
covered with a transparent button. The action
assigned to the button is to go to the next page.
2. Open the Easy Paint Template (see page 3).
3. Press
[Ctrl]
and click any of the pages of any
completed Easy Paint activity.
4. The Properties of Page Button dialog box
displays, opened to the Picture tab. Notice that
the button has no picture.
5. Click the Appearance tab and you will see that the
Transparent Button Style has been selected. This
means that the student using the activity does not
see that a large, transparent button is covering
the whole page.
6. Click the Actions tab. Notice that the action
assigned is to go to the Next Page. In other
words, by clicking the transparent button,
students are actually navigating to the next page
(which has more of the diagram filled in).
A Play Sound action has also been assigned,
but no sounds have been added to this activity.
(You could do this at a later time. Click the Sound
tab to add sound.)
7. These buttons are already set up to respond to
scanning or to the Intellikeys keyboard, for
students who will be using these input devices.
Congratulations! You have learned to customize the
Easy Paint Template, enabling you to make a wide
variety of coloring activities for your students.
