Instant-Activity Kits
Classroom Suite
includes 30 instant-activity kits. Each
kit includes an Activity ready for students to use, a
Template ready for teachers to create additional similar
activities quickly, and a PDF file of this tutorial.
Explore
The Explore instant-activity kit includes the Explore
Dinosaurs activity, the Explore Template, and a PDF
file of this tutorial. You can find these components by
opening the Math Templates folder and then the
Explore folder in the New area of
Classroom Suite
.
The Explore Template enables you to select from three
different Science News topics, or to create a topic of
your own for student activities. The template provides
the resources for students to create and write about
environments in the forest, in agriculture, or in the
desert. In addition, the template is prepared for you to
add backgrounds and pictures for any environment
your students are studying.
In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Explore
Dinosaurs activity. Later in the tutorial, you will learn to
create customized storybook writing activities, using
the Explore template.
Universal Design
The activities you create using the Explore Template
and
Classroom Suite
are designed for all students,
including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Introduction
Create a Folder for Your New
Activities
When you use this template, you will be creating new
activities for your students to use. To organize these
activities, you will want to create your own folder in the
Activities area of Classroom Suite.
1. At the Navigation Page, click the Activities button.
Click the New Folder button on the right side of
the screen. A dialog box will ask you to name the
folder. Give it the name of one of your classes
(e.g., Mrs. Smith’s Class).
2. Open the Explore Template (see page 3).
3. When you complete your work with the template
and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As
Activity dialog appears. Name your new activity,
select the folder in which you want to place your
work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be
available for you to assign to students.

Part 1: Exploring the Explore Dinosaurs Activity
The Explore Dinosaurs activity offers students an
opportunity to explore attributes of size, number, color,
and movement by interacting with a set of animals. In
this cause and effect activity, students select an
attribute for an animal and immediately see the effect
of their choice on the screen.
Opening Explore Dinosaurs
1. Sign in to
Classroom Suite
as a Teacher (see
Getting Started in the
Classroom Suite
binder). The
Navigation Screen displays.
2. Click the New button, if it is not already selected.
3. Open the Math Templates folder.
4. Open Explore. Open Explore Dinosaurs.
Exploring Explore Dinosaurs
1. The Explore Dinosaurs activity opens with a page
surrounded by several toolbars. On the left side of
the page are the Picture and Movements toolbars.
On the right side is the Backgrounds toolbar, and
across the bottom are the Numbers, Sizers, and
Colors toolbars.
2. Select a background from the right side of the page
by clicking on one of the pictures. Change
backgrounds by clicking another picture.
3. Click a dinosaur from the toolbar at the left of the
page. It will appear on the screen. Click a number,
and that number of dinosaurs will appear.
Clicking the picture of the dinosaur on the
screen will cause the image to cycle to a single
image of the next dinosaur.
4. Select a movement from the toolbar to the right of
the dinosaurs. Observe the dinosaur move.
The Movement toolbar contains a small sample
of the 90+ Mayer-Johnson picture symbols that
are included in the
Classroom Suite
Picture Library.
These symbols can be used to enhance
communication and language concepts.
5. Try the color and size toolbars.
As the dinosaur on the screen changes, a new
description is read aloud, reinforcing learning.
6. Multiple toolbars on the page may be distracting
for some users. You can remove some of these
toolbars to focus student attention on specific
concepts.
Note
Note
Note
Customizing the Appearance
You can remove toolbars to focus students on only a
few concepts.
1. Click the Author Mode button at the top left of the
screen. Press the Hide All Toolbars button.
Clicking this button returns you to the student
mode, but there are no toolbars on the screen.
2. Click the Author Mode button again. A new toolbar
displays at the top of the screen, with grey buttons
for each of the removed toolbars.
3. Select one or two toolbars you wish to have in the
activity (e.g., Pictures and Number), and then click
the Go to Student Mode button.
Two buttons cause random pictures and random
backgrounds to be selected. This feature
enables students to change the activity without
needing the entire toolbar visible on the screen.
Explore the Quiz Feature
Quizzes are one way to assess comprehension. Several
pre-made quizzes are included in Explore Dinosaurs.
1. Click the Author Mode button and then click the
blue IntelliQuiz button (shows a bright yellow Q).
2. Note that four quiz choices appear. Choose the
Find The button. This quiz only asks for dinosaurs,
so the other toolbars are hidden.
3. Click correct and incorrect answers so you can see
the feedback that students receive.
4. Click the red Stop IntelliQuiz button to end the
quiz. Explore other quizzes.
The Reports feature of
Classroom Suite
records
all student responses in the IntelliQuizzes, both
correct and incorrect. If you assign this activity
to a student and then print the report when
students are finished, you will have a helpful
assessment tool to understand their understanding
of the concepts of number, size, color, etc.
5. Close this activity without saving it.
In the next part of this tutorial, you will learn to use the
Explore template to create many additional Explore
activities.
