Grid Enabled Medical Simulation Services
GEMSS

Scope The GEMSS project demonstrated that grids can be used to provide medical practitioners and researchers with access to advanced simulation and image processing services. The GEMSS middleware has been designed as a secure and lawful bridge between remote service providers and medical clients, such as HPC providers and doctors in a hospital. Special emphasis has been given to the support of advanced security, legal issues and business processes. GEMSS has been validated by medical end-users, using six medical pilot applications (maxillofacial surgery support, MRI registration for neurosurgery, Monte Carlo radiosurgery planning, inhaled drug delivery, cardiovascular simulation and advanced image reconstruction) with varying grid requirements. GEMSS partners IDAC and ASD concluded that the middleware provides a powerful platform to expand the application delivery potential of an SME.
Innovation and functionality GEMSS adopts a service-oriented architecture driven by quality of service that comprises multiple grid clients and grid service providers, and one or more service registries for service discovery. The GEMSS middleware offers end-to-end security (a key security and privacy feature necessary for processing of patient data in a distributed grid environment), resource management including advanced reservations, and quality-of-service negotiation.
Positioning The GEMSS project has focused on the commercial use of grids in the medical area. It was therst project to address the legal aspects, at a European level, of the introduction of grids for healthcare. The GEMSS infrastructure is a general service-oriented architecture based on standard web services technology. As a unique feature, it addresses special security and legal and business requirements related to medical service provision. GEMSS provides grid solutions for todays use by medical customers.
Target users and user benets With the aim of serving medical end-users, GEMSSs current targeted user community includes:
 medical service providers: compute centres, resource (storage etc.) providers;  clinical end-users: doctors, surgeons, researchers, medical practitioners; and  SMEs: either as end-users accessing remote HPC resources or as service providers (consultants).
