Instant-Activity Kits
Classroom Suite
includes 30 instant-activity kits. Each
kit includes an Activity ready for students to use, a
Template ready for teachers to create additional similar
activities quickly, and a PDF file of this tutorial.
Storybook
The Storybook instant-activity kit includes the
Storybook The Band activity, the Storybook Template,
and a PDF file of this tutorial. You can find these
components by opening the Language Arts Templates
folder and then the Storybooks folder in the New area
of
Classroom Suite
.
The Storybook Template has been designed to enable
both you and students to create electronic storybooks
that are similar to Storybook The Band. Students in
grades 1–3 place pictures on each page as a stimulus
for writing. The text they type on the page can be read
aloud by the computer or students can record their own
voices reading the text. Completed storybooks can be
printed or played as slide shows. Three sets of pictures
are provided, as well as space for you to add pictures
for a story of your own choice.
In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the
Storybook The Band activity. Later in the tutorial, you
will learn to create customized storybook writing
activities, using the Storybook template.
Universal Design
The activities you create using the Storybook Template
and
Classroom Suite
are designed for all students,
including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Introduction
Create a Folder for Your New
Activities
When you use this template, you will be creating new
activities for your students to use. To organize these
activities, you will want to create your own folder in the
Activities area of Classroom Suite.
1. At the Navigation Page, click the Activities button.
Click the New Folder button on the right side of
the screen. A dialog box will ask you to name the
folder. Give it the name of one of your classes
(e.g., Mrs. Smith’s Class).
2. Open the Storybook Template (see page 3).
3. When you complete your work with the template
and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As
Activity dialog appears. Name your new activity,
select the folder in which you want to place your
work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be
available for you to assign to students.

This template is designed to create storybooks for
student authors. Students in primary grades enter both
pictures and text. Students select and place pictures on
each page as a stimulus for writing. The text they type
on the page can be read aloud by the computer or
students can record their own voices reading the text.
Completed storybooks can be printed or played as slide
shows. Three sets of pictures have been provided, and
you can import your own for students to work with.
Opening the Storybook Template
1. From the Navigation Screen, click the New button.
2. Open the Language Arts Templates folder.
3. Open Storybooks and choose Storybook Template.

your activity with a unique name. It will now be
saved into the Activities folder.
Selecting a Theme
1. The Storybook template opens with two toolbars at
the top of the page and one at the bottom. The top
toolbar is the authoring toolbar. The second is the
student toolbar. The toolbar at the bottom provides
access to the three stories included in the template.
2. Click the yellow Authoring Instructions button to
open a pink page of instructions for the template.
You can refer to these instructions at any time.

Exploring the Assets in Each Theme
You have selected a theme. It is the students’
responsibility to illustrate and write a story, using the
assets you have made available to them. You will now
explore the assets for Baseball Fan. Similar assets exist
for the other two theme choices.
1. Notice that a toolbar of four buttons has replaced
the Choose a Theme toolbar: Baseball Fan
Pictures, Backgrounds, Characters, and Objects.
2. Click the Baseball Fan Pictures button. Five
buttons display, each with a baseball-related
graphic. The button on the far right inserts a frame
animation showing a series of images.
3. Click Backgrounds. Notice the variety of
backgrounds. Students can use the same
background on each page of their storybook or
change backgrounds on different pages.
4. Click the Characters and Objects buttons. Notice
the choices available. Three of the characters (girl,
dog, and cat) are animated graphics.
Student authors are responsible for writing their
own baseball story and for selecting
backgrounds and pictures to illustrate that story. Your
task in using the Storybook Template is to provide the
writing and illustrating environment in which they can
develop their creativity and writing skills.
Finishing the Activity
You have selected a theme and acquainted yourself
with the resources that theme makes available to your
students. Now you will
