Book Quiz
The Book Quiz instant-activity kit includes the Bk Quiz
Julie Wolves activity, the Book Quiz Template, and a
PDF file of this tutorial. You can find these components
by opening the Language Arts Templates folder and
then the Book Quiz folder in the New area of

.
The Book Quiz Template has been designed to help
you create additional book quizzes that are similar to
Book Quiz Julie of the Wolves. This template enables
you to prepare an activity focused on one of three
books (
Hatchet,
by Gary Paulsen,
Charlotte’s Web
, by
E.B. White, and
The Incredible Journey
, by Sheila Burn-
ford. In addition, you can import your own pictures and
create a similar quiz for a story of your choice.
In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Bk Quiz
Julie Wolves activity. Later in the tutorial, you will learn
to create customized book quiz activities, using the
Book Quiz template.
Universal Design
The activities you create using the Book Quiz Template
and Classroom Suite are designed for all students,
including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Introduction
Create a Folder for Your New
Activities
When you use this template, you will be creating new
activities for your students to use. To organize these
activities, you will want to create your own folder in the
Activities area of
Classroom Suite.
1. At the Navigation Screen, click the Activities
button. Click the New Folder button on the right
side of the screen. A dialog box will ask you to
name the folder. Give it the name of one of your
classes (e.g., Mrs. Smith’s Class).
2. Open the Book Quiz Template (see page 3).
3. When you complete your work with the template
and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As
Activity dialog appears. Name your new activity,
select the folder in which you want to place your
work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be
available for you to assign to students.

Part 1: Exploring the Book Quiz Julie of the Wolves Activity
Students report on reading and study of a specific text,
Julie of the Wolves
, by Jean Craighead George. This
activity can be used as the focus for a class discussion,
as a book report, or as a quiz.
Opening Book Quiz Julie of the Wolves
1. Sign in to
Classroom Suite
as a Teacher (see
Getting Started in the
Classroom Suite
binder). The
Navigation Screen displays.
2. Click the New button, if it is not already selected.
Open the Language Arts Templates folder.
3. Open the Book Quiz folder and Bk Qz Julie Wolves.
The Book Quiz Julie of the Wolves activity displays.
Exploring Book Quiz Julie of the
Wolves
1. The top toolbar in this activity provides tools for
navigating the activity. The second toolbar provides
access to additional response toolbars.
2. A series of questions display on the page, with
blanks ready for students to enter answers.
Students can type answers from the keyboard or
select words from response toolbars.
3. Click the green Directions button. The directions
are read aloud.
4. Place the cursor at sentence 1. Click the Read
Sentence button to hear the question read aloud.
5. Notice the toolbar with elements of story structure:
Setting, Characters, Conflicts, Plot, Theme.
6. Click the Setting Word Bank button. A toolbar
displays at the right of the page with responses
choices. Answer some questions.
7. Click the Next Answer Field and Previous Answer
Field buttons to move easily between answer fields.
8. Click the Characters Word Bank button. Continue
answering questions. Make some mistakes.
9. Click the Check Work button to get feedback on
your answers.
10. Close this activity without saving.
You can use this activity immediately with students.
In the next part of this tutorial, you will learn to use the
Book Quiz Template to create additional quiz activities
about books your students are reading.

activities you make with this and other templates in

5. From the File menu, select Save As Activity. Save
your activity as
Book Quiz Web
. It will now be
saved into the Activities folder.
Selecting a Story
1. The Book Quiz Template provides authoring
instructions on-screen, as well as additional
authoring buttons in the top toolbar.
2. Click one of the title buttons in the top toolbar, for
example
Charlotte’s Web
.
3. Then click the Setting Word Bank button. Notice
that some of the buttons have pictures associated
with
Charlotte’s Web
. You will learn how to
customize word bank buttons on page 5 of this
tutorial.
4. If you want to change your selection, click the Start
Over item. This will enable you to make another
choice.
Each story choice provides pictures appropriate
for that story in the Characters and Settings
toolbars.
In the next part of the tutorial, you will edit the quiz
questions and customize the word banks of response
choices.

Part 2: Using the Book Quiz Template

Editing Quiz Questions
You need to edit the quiz questions for your Book Quiz
You will work with locked text and answer fields.
Unlocking and Locking Text
First you will unlock the text, so that you can modify or
change the sentences. Then you will relock it, to
protect it against changes and to ensure that student
responses are placed in the answer fields.
1. The text on the page is locked. To verify this, from
the IntelliTalk menu, select Highlight Locked Text.
Underlines display under all the sentences.
2. From the Edit menu, choose Select All.
3. From the Text menu, deselect Lock Selected Text.
Notice that blue underlines disappear. This verifies
for you that the text has been unlocked.
4. Edit question 6 to read:
The grumpiest character
in the story is Templeton
.
5. Change sentence 10 to read:
The story begins
when Fern gets a baby pig named Wilbur to
raise. He grows fast and has to move out to
live in the barn.
6. Edit the rest of the questions.
Next you will replace some of the words and phrases in
your sentences with answer fields.
Inserting Answer Fields and Locking Text
1. In question 6, highlight the word Templeton.
2. Click the Insert Answer Field button. The text will
disappear and an answer field will display, with the
correct answer already specified.
3. To verify that the correct answer has been
captured,
[Ctrl]+click
the empty answer field. The
Properties of Answer Field dialog box will display,
showing the correct answer is Templeton.
4. Repeat steps 1–2 above for question 10, replacing
Wilbur and Barn. In the same way, create answer
fields for all of the questions in the quiz.
5. From the Edit menu, choose Select All. From the
Text menu, select Lock Selected Text. All text on
the page will now be locked again. Student answers
will only go in the answer fields.
6. From the IntelliTalk menu, deselect Highlight
Locked Text. The underlines disappear.

Customizing the Word Banks
Next you will modify the buttons in the word banks so
that they match the new answers you have created.
1. Click the Setting Word Bank button. The toolbar of
response choices for questions about the setting
display at the right of the page.
2. Notice that the bottom two buttons on the word
bank say
word
. You will be changing the text on
each button to provide word banks for students to
answer the questions about
Charlotte’s Web
.
3. From the Edit menu, select Custom Toolbar and
Buttons. Yellow and blue dialog boxes display
beside the toolbar.
4. Click the bottom right button (word) to select it.
5. Click the Button Properties button in the blue
Selected Button dialog box.
6. In the Button Name box, change the name of the
button from
word
to
barnyard
.
7. Repeat steps 4–6, changing the other button to
dump
.
8. Use steps 4–6 to edit all of the buttons in the Plot,
Theme, and Conflict word banks.
9. Make sure you have added the answers students
will need to select from
the word bank buttons you
are editing.
10. When you have finished editing the word banks,
click the Done button at the top right of the page to
close the Custom Toolbar and Buttons dialog box.
Finishing the Activity
1. Click the purple Finish Activity button.
2. When prompted, replace the previous version of
your activity by clicking the Replace button.
3. Your Book Quiz Web activity is automatically saved
into the Activities folder, ready to be assigned to
students. The toolbars at the top now have only
those buttons that students need to use.
Congratulations! You have created a new Book Quiz
activity for your students. You can use the same
techniques to create a similar activity for any book your
students are reading.
Part 2: Using the Book Quiz Template

Creating a Quiz for a New Story
You can use the Book Quiz Template to create a quiz
for any book your students are reading.
1. Open the Book Quiz Template (see page 3).
2. From the File menu, select Save As Activity. Name
your activity
Tom Sawyer Quiz
and save it.
Create the Quiz Questions
1. Compose the sentences you want students to work
with in the quiz. Note which words or phrases in
each sentence will become answer fields.
2. Follow the steps on page 4, entering the text on the
page and inserting answer fields.
Customize the Word Banks
1. Click the New Quiz button in the top toolbar.
2. Click the Setting Word Bank button. The setting
toolbar displays at the right, but there are no
pictures or story-specific words on the buttons.
3. Follow steps 3–6 on page 5, creating word bank
buttons with the needed responses for your new
quiz questions.
4. When possible, add a picture to the button to
support the meaning of the text.
5.
[Ctrl]+click
the button to which you want to add a
picture. The Button Properties dialog box displays.
6. Click the Insert Picture From Library button.
7. When the Picture Library dialog box displays, use
the Category drop down list to select a picture that
will support the word you have chosen.
8. Click Insert when you have selected a picture.
Then click OK to close the dialog box.
9. Change other buttons, using steps 5–8.
Finishing the Activity
1. Click the purple Finish Activity button.
2. When prompted, replace the previous version of
your activity by clicking the Replace button.
Congratulations! You have learned to create a
completely customized Book Quiz activity for your
students, suitable for any book your students are
reading.
