- Ill Computerized Land Evaluation Databases in the European Community.
Updating 1987-88 of the EC Land Data Catalogue.
2nd edition
Preface.
This paper presents the first update of the EC Land Data Catalogue.
Additionally 61 of the 102 databases recorded in the 1st edition of
the Catalogue (CEC DG-VI, 1986) have been revised. 32 databases are
new in this edition and the Catalogue contains now totally 134 data
bases.
The update procedure was set up ultimo 1987 after recommendation by
the Programme Committee of the Land and Water Use and Management
under the auspicies of the General Directorate of Agriculture (DG-
VI) and based on an EC-workshop held in Pisa, May 1987. Collection
of information was carried out in each of the member states. Data
collection was coordinated by Miss A.E. Tarran, the Ministry of
Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, England, who sent out questionnaire
forms to the national point of contacts (NPOC), which were nominated
at the Pisa-workshop. The NPOC's were mainly taken as the national
representatives who have participated in the EC-workshops concerning
computerization of land data, where the Catalogue currently have
been discussed and evaluated. The national point of contactse
been responsible for collection of the relevant information within
each country. The appointed NPOC's are listed below.
The update results have been presented and discussed at the latest
EC-workshop "Application of computerized EC-soil Maps and Climate
Data" held in Wageningen, november 1988.
The computerization of questionnaire data was undertaken by Dr. Ivan
Munk, The Ministry of Agriculture, Bureau of Land Data (ADK), Den
mark. The total text database of the Catalogue is stored on the ADK-
computer system. Dr. Munk developed the software for text processing
which was initially applied for a similar Danish catalogue publica
tion. Dr. Axel Nørr (formerly ADK) at the National Cadastre and Sur
vey of Denmark coordinated the editorial work in the update project
as well as in the initial questionnaire survey. All new contributi
ons and revisions have been computerized in the text database at
ADK.
In the last 3 years, since the information for the Land Data Catalo
gue was collected and published in its 1. edition, there have been
considerable advances in data collection and Geographical Informati
on System technology in the member countries. The Commission of the
EC itself has also initiated programmes which involves computeriza
tion and treatment of Community Data, e.g. the CORINE- and LFA-
programmes. The actual update of the Catalogue should maintain its
value as an up to date source of reference on computerized land data
for soil, water climate and topography. At the above mentioned EC-workshop in Wageningen it was concluded by
the national representation that the Catalogue should be updated at
regular intervals. This should be done as a funded project (with the
support of the EC) in consultation with the CORINE-programme.
As such it is hoped that the Catalogue - by periodical updates - can
be a living document for exchange of information between planning
and administrative levels, scientists, etc. It is hoped too, that it
might contribute to an evaluation of the various data sources, data
storage and retrieval techniques, available within the EC-countries.
Therefore it has been approved by DG-VI that the results of the
update questionnaire should be published. This publication takes
form as loose-leaf prints which can be inserted in the ring binders
of the Catalogue. Due to the fact that 70% of the entries are revi
sed, the total number of pages have been replaced. Database sets/ob
jects in the Catalogue are to be replaced in the future by a new
print when they are updated by the owner of the data. The publicati
ons are carried out by DG-XIII, and distributed from the Office for
Official Publications, Luxembourg.
The background of the questionnaire content and guideline to the use
of the catalogue is presented in chapter 1.
An example of a retrieval from the Catalogue database at ADK is pre
sented in chapter 2. The text processing system facilitate searching
in the different entries A, B, or C. Such retrievals will facilitate
specific surveys of the Catalogue. A detailed documentation of the
Land Data Catalogue and the text processing system has been reported
at the EC-workshop in Pisa, May 1987 (Nørr et al., 1987). The que
stionnaire forms and guidance to completion is attached as chapter
3.
The editor of the Catalogue acknowledges the people involved in the
update project, particularly the national representatives who col
lected the information and finally my English and Danish colleagues
for the joint work.
Finally thanks to DG-VI and DG-XIII for sponsoring the publication
of the Catalogue.
