Though they have been linked in some myths, Dionysus and Heracles may also have been dissociated : Sophists, Rhetors and poets would have them compete in a syncrisis. Greek vases depict them set against each other in drinking competitions, which used to be popular in Athens. They are also illustrated in some mosaics dating back to 2nd and 3rd centuries, that have been discovered in the Middle East (two of them in Antioch and one in Sepphoris). Dionysus stands as the winner and the figures in his thiasus are celebrating his victory. Another mosaic in Apamea, though from a later period, is very likely to deal with the same theme.
