PREFACE

The results of my research are compiled in different papers. My own contributions are as
followed:

1) Paleocene sea-level and productivity changes at the southern Tethyan margin (El
Kef, Tunisia), chapter II.
Authors: Elisa Guasti, Tanja J. Kouwenhoven, Henk Brinkhuis and Robert P. Speijer.
Journal: Marine Micropaleontology (2005) 55, 1-17
Status: published.
Own contributions: organic dinocysts evaluation (relative abundances,
protoperidinioid/gonyaulacoid ratio and terrestrial/marine ratio); integration of these data
with published results on benthic foraminifera, text and figures.

2) Paleoenvironmental change at the Danian-Selandian transition in Tunisia: planktic
foraminifera and organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts records, chapter III
Authors: Elisa Guasti, Robert P. Speijer, Henk Brinkhuis, Jan Smit and Etienne Steurbaut.

Own contribution: collecting samples, stratigraphy of the localities, biostratigraphy,
evaluation of planktic foraminiferal assemblages and relative proxies (relative abundances,
planktic/benthic ratio, numbers of foraminifera per gram), organic dinocysts assemblages
and relative proxies (protoperidinioid/gonyaulacoid ratio, terrestrial/marine ratio), stable
isotope measurements (part of them); text and figures.

3) Transient biotic change within the Danian- Selandian transition in Egypt and
Jordan, chapter IV.

First of all, I would like to thank Prof. Robert P. Speijer, who constantly encouraged and
supported me with his enthusiasm and reliance in believing in my self. He also opened a
door into my knowledge of the Paleocene and of the Arabic world.
Prof. Jochen Kuss is kindly thanked for all his support and the fruitful discussions we had,
in particular in the final stage of my PhD-project. A special thank for patiently explaining me
the German university sytem.
I thank Prof. Helmut Willems for setting up the Europrox, and all the people involved.

their support and patience in organizing interesting activities. Henk Brinkhuis, from whom I

The period spent in Utrecht was really special. For that, I thank all the people I met during
that time and made that period so pleasant. Especially Tanja, who since she picked me up
as a fax in far February 1999, she still encourages me with her friendship and several helps.
Francesca, Timme, Appy and Wessel have been always special during this continuous back
and forward Italy-Germany-Holland.
I would like to thank Astrid, Simi, Ellen and Sander for the kind hospitality during all my
visits in Leuven, and the long drinking night-chat (right, Simi?).
During the last part of writing up, I warmly thank Heiko for his support.

Besides the distance, my Italian friends were always present in my life, sometimes only

Very special thank goes to my family, in particular to my parents, who even though they
