Diese Arbeit widme ich meinen Eltern.vivii
Wenn wir anfangen, etwas zu glauben,
so nicht einen einzelnen Satz, sondern
ein ganzes System von S˜ atzen.
Nicht einzelne Axiome leuchten mir ein,
sondern ein Sytem worin sich Folgen und
Pr˜ amisen gegenseitig stutzen.˜

I am deeply grateful to my thesis supervisor Dieter Lust,˜ who ofiered me the possi-
bility to do my doctoral thesis under his supervision. After supporting me as a diploma
student and gently introducing me into the exciting fleld of fundamental research, he
then ofiered me a position as PhD fellow, where I could further beneflt from his fan-
tastic group and chair members. There and only there, I tasted for the flrst time real
physics which has dramatically in uenced my philosophy of life.
Moreover, I express my deepest thanks to the person with whom I worked very
closely all this time { Stephan Stieberger. He guided me into the subject of string
amplitudes and their fascinating relations to number theory and modular functions.
We spent hundreds of hours together struggling about problems and their solutions.
It is him who taught me what hard work and perseverance really means.
Further, I sincerely thank Tom Taylor, the person who knows best my work, be-
yond Dieter and Stephan. I also thank him for his kindness of having written me
recommendation letters for my applications. I am glad to have had the opportunity
to meet him here in Munich.
I am glad to thank Danilo Diaz for his many delightful mathematical explanations
and remarks. During my stay in Berlin he supported enthusiastically my approach to
string theory accompanied by funny and useful anecdotes.
I am also grateful I had the chance to be a visitor since beginning of 2006 in the
group of Elias Kiritsis, at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. It was for me a very good and
intense time.
I thank Waldemar Schulgin and Daniel Kre for investing many laborious hours in
my PhD thesis while printing and binding it.
I thank Matteo Cardela for many discussions mainly focused on themes concerning
the opposite sex.
Und naturlic˜ h Danke an die katze!x
