GIANELLI D/rec/orGovernor Water ResourcesState of California Department of FOREWORD The South Bay Gro\ind Water Basin in Alameda, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties is one of the most intensively developed ground water basins indicatedin the State. Previous studies have that the average withdrawal fresh ground water exceeded the natural recharge for severalof years. The lowered levels have resvilted in extensive saline water intrusion and subsidence of the land surface. Local agencies are now artificially recharging the ground water basin in several areas using both local surface runoff and imported water, in an effort to stabilize water levels and pre- vent further intrusion and subsidence. Previous investigations were limited in scope and treated in detail only a portion of the current area of investigation.
