Description
The palaeolithic site of Grotte Mandrin (Malataverne, Drôme) is at present the only shelter known to have been occupied by Mousterian populations on the east bank of the Rhône. The quality and quantity of the artefacts, both lithic and palaeontological, make this site one of the most complete in the Rhône valley. Grotte Mandrin, containing several Mousterian strata, allows the diachronic analysis of the various occupation levels. Spatial analysis of the four lower levels, although only preliminary, reveals the good state of conservation, and points to some spatial organisation by the prehistoric occupants. The first technological studies have allowed the technical characteristics of the assemblages to be assessed: a Levallois blade-like process, discoid production, some Kombewa debitage and non-Levallois blade production all co-exist. This first technological analysis allows the specific nature of these lithic assemblages to be established, compared with other Mousterian fades in the Rhône region, and supports the hypothesis of a true regional entity.
