Annales de Bretagne et des pays de l'Ouest - Année 1993 - Volume 100 - Numéro 3 - Pages 285-297During the second half of the XVIIIth century the Beauharnais family used to exploit slt marshes on the lsle of Ré. In the 1770s, however, after ensuring a most confortable life for the gentry of La Rochelle during the previous century, the exploitation of saline marshes ceased to be that white gold comparable to the white sugar from the West Indies. Of course, the natural phenomena, the mediterranean trade competition, as well as the carelessnes of managers were a hindrance... but the war for Independence in America, above all, seemed to give the coup de grace to such a really fragile manna. Despite all this, thought, wasn 't the Isle of Ré still the Beauharnais' saline pearl at a time when the relurn of peace allowed some relief before the Revolution ?
