Description
The organization of client-supplier relations is the subject of the economic theory of vertical relations. Since R. Coase' s seminal work, this issue has been dealt with in relation to the boundaries of firms. This article recalls the main concepts proposed in the context of this problematic. It stresses that, in the presence of specific investments in a context of uncertainty and incomplete contracts, an optimal a priori form of organizing inter-firm relations does not exit. Trust between partners is then one of the essential factors in stabilizing long-term contractual relations. In the telecommunications sector today, such diversity exists in the organization of economic relations between operators and industrialists. The institutionzl environment (regulations, industrial policy objectives, national independence, etc.) has been and remains the main element in the structuring and evolution of the these conflictual long-term partnerships which have been established between network operators and their main suppliers.
