It is hoped that this Medicaid waiver will improve the service system, allow for greater personal choice, provide financial transparency and efficiency and create richer lives for New Yorkers with developmental disabilities. This waiver will be an agreement between New York State and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that will waive certain Medicaid rules so New York State can continue to receive Medicaid funding for services while system improvements are developed and tested. Demonstrating the effectiveness of the planned system is an essential part of the “People First Demonstration Waiver.” This is a five year process and may be difficult to understand. Web page: 1-866-946-9733www.opwdd.ny.gov/2011_waiver e-mail:People.First@opwdd.ny.gov Phone:  ************************************************************************************************************************************ CONFERENCE FOR GRANDPARENTS  The Sibling Project of MHA is sponsoring a one day conference for grandparents of children and adults with developmental disabilities. The event will be held at Mental Health Association in Middletown on October 22, 2011 from 10 am to 1 pm and will include a light lunch for participants.  Grandparents can be the greatest assets a child has in his/her life. Support for the mothers and fathers can make a tremendous difference, often improving the quality of life for the entire family whether or not a person with a disability is part of the family. When there is a person with a disability in the family, the additional support that grandparents provide can make a huge difference for all the family members.  To learn more about how you, a grandparent, can assist your children and grandchildren, to share your ideas and suggestions and to provide mutual support, attend this conference. Call Hava at 342-2400 ext. 254 to register.  ************************************************************************************************************************************ EIGHTH ANNUAL AUTISM MOVE-A-THON  The annual Autism Move-a-thon of Orange County will be held on October 9, 2011 from 10 am to 3 pm at the Group Picnic Area, right next to the Day Camp Area where the event has been held in the past. In addition to all the usual children’s activities –face painting, pumpkin painting, drums to play, rabbits to pet, music, arts and crafts, sensory activities, bouncy houses, Lego tablea trackless train to ride around the move-a-thon area.there will be  There may be a small fee for the train to offset the cost and allow the event to create profit to benefit the Autism Spectrum Fund. There will be a free breakfast, lunch to purchase, free family photos, giant raffle, information expo, book sale and autism related items to purchase.  Please consider not only attending the move-a-thon but also assisting in raising funds by asking businesses that you frequent to place an advertisement in the move-a-thon journal or donating an item or gift certificate for the raffle.
