November/December 2010
Fall has officially arrived! It is time to turn
back the clocks and to change the batteries in
your smoke detectors. Also it’s a great time to
celebrate The Great American Smokeout
(GASO) sponsored by the American Cancer
Society (ACS) on November 18. ACS is
encouraging smokers to use this date to make
a plan to quit or to plan in advance and quit
smoking that day.
If you are a smoker or know someone that is
interested in quitting please refer him or her
to the New York State Smokers’ Quitline
(www.nysmokefree.com or 1-866-NY-
QUITS). They provide support and nicotine
replacement therapy (for those eligible) all
free of charge!
To find out more about GASO events in
Cayuga County check out page two of the
Cayuga County Tobacco-Free Times.
Warm Regards,

Have you heard about the newest trend
sweeping across New York?
Over 180 municipalities and a growing number of organizations and businesses in New
York State have implemented a tobacco-free policy. Do you want to know why?
Researchers have found that secondhand smoke is harmful in outdoor settings.
Tobacco-free policies can reduce hazards associated with children and animals playing
with or ingesting cigarette butts.
Tobacco-free policies establish a community norm that tobacco use is not acceptable
behavior for youth or adults within the community.
A community survey conducted in June 2008 by
Cayuga County Tobacco Free Partnership
indicated that at least 79% of residents of Cayuga County support smoking restrictions in
public locations.

The Cayuga County Tobacco-Free
Partnership (CCTFP) is funded by the
New York State Tobacco Control Program
and is administered by the Cayuga
Community Health Network.
The goals of the CCTFP are to change the
social norms and to decrease the social
acceptability of tobacco use and to reduce
the burden of tobacco in our community.
The CCTFP reaches those goals by
educating the community and legislators
about:
o
Tobacco marketing in stores
and the impact of this
marketing on youth.
o
The effects of second hand
smoke, tobacco litter and the
influence of tobacco use on
youth and our environment.
The CTTFP works with the support of the
CCTFP Coalition. The CCTFP Coalition
is a group of local agencies and citizen
advocates committed to creating a tobacco-
free society for Cayuga County. The
Coalition is open to all citizens and
organizations in Cayuga County who
support tobacco control.
