L'homéopathie est née en 1796 par la publication d'un article d'Hahnemann dans une revue fondée l'année précédente par un médecin allemand, professeur à Iéna, C.W. Hufeland, qui resta en contact amical avec Hahnemann plus de trente ans. Cette revue, défendant la philosophie expérimentale et à vocation pratique, sera pourtant le principal organe de diffusion des idées d'Hahnemann jusqu'à la publication de l'Organon en 1810. La pensée d'Hahnemann nous paraît donc, en partie, s'élaborer en étroit rapport avec les idées exprimées dans cette revue, et sans doute encore plus avec les propres écrits d'Hufeland, auteur prolixe qui a publié en 1795, 1796 et 1800, à l'époque de la création de l'homéopathie, trois ouvrages importants qui ont certainement marqué Hahnemann. Dans les années 1825-1830, Hufeland a tenté de juger de façon impartiale l'homéopathie, attaquée de toute part. Sa défense, aussi bien que sa critique ferme, est un témoignage vivant, qui paraît assez juste, bien qu'un peu faussée par l'état peu avancé de la médecine à son époque. Il relève la polémique à un niveau intellectuel qui n'a souvent rien à envier aux débats modernes.
Hufeland (1762-1836) and homeopathy.
In 1796 homeopathy was born by the publication of an Hahnemann's article in a periodic founded by C.W. Hufeland, a german physician, Professor in Iena, who was friendly with Hahnemann during more of thirty years. This periodic, which defended the experimental philosophy and was devoted to the practical medicine, will be nevertheless the mean instrument to spread Hahnemann's ideas until the issue of the Organon in 1810. Also, the thought of Hahnemann looks us as built up itself partly in large connection with the ideas of this review, and probably still more with the Hufeland's writings. The prolix author Hufeland published in 1795, 1796 and 1800, at the same time of the homeopathy's foundation, three main works that Hahnemann has certainly distinguished. Beetween 1825 and 1830, Hufeland tried to put himself as an inprejudiced judge of the attacked homeopathy. His pleading, as well as his straigh critical remarks is an authentic and right enough testimony, only made a little false by the state of medicine in these days. He put up the controversy at least so high as the today's polemics.
