The Brotherhood of Sts. Cosmos and Damian at Luzarches.
The church of St. Cosmas and St. Damian which stands at the corner of the rue de l'École-de-Médecine and boulevard St-Michel was once the center of the Brotherhood of Barber-Surgeons of Paris. In the 14th century, this Brotherhood was merged with the Brotherhood of St. Cosmas of Luzarches (30 km north of Paris) whose origins were based on the worship of relics brought back from the Second Crusade by Jean de Beaumont, part of which were divided between the Church of St. Cosmas of Paris and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame.
At Luzarches, Jean de Beaumont had built the capitular church of St. Cosmas of which only some gothic arcades still remain. But the parish church of St. Damian, of roman origin, still stands. Two carved sections of the porch (16th century) show the birth and education of the twin brothers Cosmas and Damian, the pilgrims, and probably the miracle of the black leg. A panel on a 17th century chair shows the two saints with a smaller person who stirs a pestle in a mortar. A painting by A. Duval (1852) has as its subject Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian curing the sick. An inscription dated 1705 recalls indirectly that the members of the brotherhood gave free consultations to the poor.
There existed at least five examples of images published by the brotherhood. Of the fifth type, nothing remains of the original, but the author is able to describe it in detail due to an extremely rare re-edition published in the 19th century and of which he is able, for the first time, to publish an example.
The author also discusses other aspects of the cult of the two saints at Luzarches and regrets that the pilgrimages there have practically disappeared. Die Bruderschaft der HI. Cosmas und Damian in Luzarches.
Die Pariser Sankt Cosmas und Damiankirche welche sich an der Ecke der « rue de l'Ecole-de-Médecine » und des « boulevard Saint-Michel » befand, war der Sitz der Barbier-Chirurgenbruderschaft der Hauptstadt. Im 14. Jahrhundert vereinigte sich diese mit der Skt. Cosmasbruderschaft zu Luzarches (30 Km nördlich von Paris), welche letztere auf ein Reliquienkult zurückzuführen ist. Diese wurden durch Jean de Beaumont vom 2. Kreuzzug hierher gebracht und ein Teil davon zwischen der Kirche Skt. Cosmas von Paris und die Notre-Dame Kathedrale geteilt.
In Luzarches liess Jean de Beaumont eine Stiftskirche errichten, wovon noch einige gothischen Bögen übrig bleiben. Doch die romanische Skt. Damianpfarrkirche ist noch erhalten. Zwei Steinskulpturregister beiderseits der Eingangstürc (16. Jht) zeigen Geburt und Belehrung der Zwillinge Cosmas und Damian, Pilger, und wahrscheinlich das Wunder der Anheilung eines Negerbeines an einen Weissen. Eine Kanzelfüllung (17. Jht) zeigt die zwei Heiligen mit einer kleinen Gestalt welche den Pistil im Mörser rührt. Eine Bildmalerei von A. Duval (1852) stellt Skt. Cosmas und Damian die Kranken heilend dar. Eine Inschrift von 1705 erinnert, indirekterweise, an die für die Armen kostenlos gegebene Sprechstunde der Bruderschaftsmitglieder.
Es hat mindestens fünf Typen von Andachtsbilder der Bruderschaft gegeben. Vom fünften Typ bleibt kein Original mehr erhalten, doch der Autor beschreibt ihn sorgfältig nach einem sehr seltenen Nachdruck des 19. Jahrhunderts, von welchem er zum ersten Mal ein Exemplar veröffentlicht.
Er erwähnt auch aile anderen Erinnerungsstücke an den Kult der zwei Heiligen in Luzarches, und schliesst indem er sein Bedauern darüber ausdrückt dass diese Wallfahrt praktisch verschwunden ist.
