The Apothecaries at the Court of the Popes in Avignon.
The accounts of the Apostolic Chamber give us precious and often unpublished information on the Pontifical Court of Avignon in the 14th century. We find therein the names of various purveyors to the Court, including several apothecaries who were either citizens of Avignon or Italians from Tuscany, some bearing the title of Courtier.
These apothecaries supplied the Apostolic Palace with confectioneries and spices of all kinds, as well as torches and wax candles for general illumination and for religious ceremonies. Their number varied, but under each Pontificat was one who played a major role. He was the apothecary to the Pope, apothecarius papae. It was he who supplied any medication intended for the Pontiff, and he who would attend to the embalming of the corpse - with the aid of his assistants - upon the Pope's death.
Under John XXII (1316-1334) it was Jacques Mélior who enjoyed this privilege. A native of Florence, he bore the title of Courtier. His supplies were often controlled by Geoffroi Isnard, appointed physician to the Holy Father. Under Benedict XII (1334-1342) this function was filled by Francis of Cerdona, who had been one of the sergeants-at-arms of the Pope. Under Clement VI (1342-1352) and Innocent VI (1352- 1362) it was again Jacques Mélior who filled the post. His son, Agapit, and then Jean Mercier, a native of the diocese of Rodez, functioned successively under Urban V (1362-1370). With Gregory XI (1370-1378) the name of Agapit Mélior reappears.
Among the apothecaries who supplied the Court from 1317 to 1376 we note in chronological order, Hugolin Tinhacii, an important supplier, Lhancard of Treves, Caumus, Peter and James of Cerdona, Guocio Bensivenis, Bertrand Gautier, Adhemar Barrai, Bertrand of Noves, Lucas, John of Grenhan, Benedict Cavalier, Steven Arnaud and finally John Servient.
Die Apotheker am Hofe der Päpste in Avignon
Die Rechnungen der aposto- lischen Kammer enthalten kostbare und öfters unveröffentlichte Nachweisungen über den päpstlichen Hof von Avignon im XIV Jahrhundert. Darin findet man die Namen der verschiedenen Lieferanten der päpstlichen Regierung und, darunter, mehrere Apotheker, Bürger von Avignon oder Italiener, gebürtig aus Toskana, gewifte haben den Höflings Titel. Diese Apotheker beliefern den Apostolischen Palast mit Konditoreiwaren und allerhand Gewürzen, sowie mit Fackeln und Wachs-Kerzen fur die Beleuchtung der Wfohnungen oder für die geistlichen Feierlichkeiten. Die Zahl der Apotheker ist sehr verschieden, aber, unter jedem Pontifikat, ist einer der die Hauptrolle spielt. Es ist der Apotheker des Papstes, apothecarius papae. Er verschafft die für den Papst bestimmten Heilmittel und, am Tode dieses letzteren, besorgt er mit seinen Gehilfen die Einbalsamierung des Leinams. Unter Johannes XXII (1316-1334), ist es Jakob Mélioris der dieses Vorrecht geniesst. Aus Florenz gebürtig, hat er den Höflings Titel. Seine Lieferungen sind öfters überwacht von Gottfried Isnard, angestellter Arzt des Heiligen Vaters. Unter Benedikt XII (1334-1342), sind die Verrichtungen von Frantz von Cerdona erfüllt, der bei den Waffenunteroffizieren des Papstes figuriert. Unter Klemens VI (1342-1352) und Innozenz VI (1352-1362), ist es wieder Jakob Melioris der diese Stelle besetzt. Sein Sohn Agapit, dann Johann Mercier, gebürtig in der Diözese von Rodez, nehmen nacheinander die Ablösung, unter Urban V (1362-1370). Mit Gregorius XI (1370-1378) erscheint wieder der Name von Agapit Melioris.
Unter den Apothekern welche die päpstliche Regierung, von 1317 bis 1376 versorgen, verzeichnen wir, in der chronologischen Ordnung, Hugo Tinhacii, wichtiger Lieferant, Lhancard von Trevis, Caumus, Peter und Stephan Agarni, Wilhelm Ortolan, Peter und Jakob von Cerdona, Guocio Bensivenis, Bertram Gautier, Adhemar Barrai, Bertram von Noves, Lukas, Johann von Grenhan, Benedikt Cavalier, Stephan Arnaud und endlich Johann Servient.
