Description

Revue d'histoire de la pharmacie - Année 1975 - Volume 63 - Numéro 226 - Pages 443-450
The knowledge on the galbanum of the Italian Scholars from the XVI to the XVIII century.
Following up some previous studies the author examines what is known about galbanum from the XVIth to the XVIIth century. The study is based on two works which, though not widely renowned, are very interesting from the viewpoint of the history of culture. They are the Shilthe Haggiborim (Shields of the Strong), written in Hebrew by Abramo Portaleone (1542-1612), a Mantuan physician, and the Thesaurus antiquitatum sacrarum... by Biagio Ugolini (1744-1769).
The volumes LX, XI, XIII and XXXII of the latter contain the Latin translation, together, with the Hebrew text, of some chapters of the Shilthe Haggiborim.
In the Shilthe Haggiborim the galbanum is described in chapter 80, cc. 84a-84b. The same drug is also described in chapter in, vol. XI (Commentarius de suffitu), columns 333-338, of the Thesaurus antiquitatum sacrarum.
In this paper the author gives the French translation of the chapters of the above mentioned works dealing with galbanum, and some information on the characteristics, properties and uses of galbanum in the light of Renaissance and to-day's knowledge.
