Description
More than 90 % of Haitians are illiterate. Two official languages exist in Haiti : Creole and French. Competence in French is a key skill, allowing access to higher education. The influence of American has further complicated the forms of Creole, creating a greater distance between Haitians and the French language. In Jean Metellus' s view, literacy is imperative for the Haitian people in order for them to lay claim to their own, as well as French and international culture.
