À la fin du siècle dernier, les premiers commerçants allemands firent fabriquer de la monnaie de perles au Nouveau-Hanovre pour payer le coprah qu'ils achetaient aux habitants de la côte nord-est de la Nouvelle-Irlande. L'introduction de ce flux de monnaie dans le réseau des échanges traditionnels pourrait très bien être à l'origine de l'exceptionnel accroissement de la production artistique malanggan de 1880 à 1920. L'une des principales fonctions des cérémonies malanggan étant de gouverner le système foncier, on peut aussi s'interroger sur les conséquences socio-économiques et politiques de cette évolution.
At the end of the last century the first German tradesmen fabricated pearl money at New Hanover to pay for copra which they bought from the inhabitants of the north-east coast of New Ireland. The introduction of this flood of money to the traditional network of exchange could be at the root of the exceptional increase in malanggan artistic works from 1880 to 1920. One of the main functions of malanggan ceremonies being to govern the system of land tenure, it also raises questions on the socio-economic and political consequences of this development.

Abstract

At the end of the last century the first German tradesmen fabricated pearl money at New Hanover to pay for copra which they

bought from the inhabitants of the north-east coast of New Ireland. The introduction of this flood of money to the traditional
