Description
After studying wear, technology, composition of burial assemblages and species selected for manufacture of bone and antler ornaments and tools in five graves from the Eure département, these aspects are examined in collective graves elsewhere in the Paris basin. The results are compared to finds from earlier single burials : Cerny, Chasséen, Michelsberg. The durability of traditions of representation of individuals from single to collective burials is underlined. Representation of the armed man as an individual is still present at the end of the Neolithic. Its roots seem to lie in the Cerny, and perhaps even in the Bandkeramik. It thus seems that an individual social logic continues to be expressed in collective burials. This logic appears to co-exist with the grouping of the dead in the same space and with monumentality. In this manner, the study provides new insight into the change from single to collective burial.
