Photoluminescence properties of heat-treated silicon-based polymers: promising materials for LED applications A dissertation approved by the Department of Materials Science Technische Universität Darmstadt in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doktor −Ingenieur (Dr.-Ing.) by Dipl.-Ing. Ilaria Menapace from Cles (Trento), Italy Referee: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ralf Riedel Co-referee: Prof. Dr. Gian Domenico Sorarù Date of submission: 1 February 2010 oral examination: 10 March 2010 Darmstadt 2010 D17 Acknowledgments The present PhD thesis outlines the highlight of the work that I performed at the TU Darmstadt between September 2006 and December 2009. Special thanks are for Prof. Ralf Riedel, who offered me the possibility to work in a European project, the “Polycernet”, inside the Marie Curie frame, where I could attend many workshops and have collaborations at a European scale. Moreover, during my PhD, I could independently develop my scientific work and participate to international conferences. I thank Gabriela Mera, who assisted me in my whole PhD, and contributed to the work especially from the chemistry point of view.
