December 29, 2009: Bible Study Scripture Reference: Mark 5:36 Topic: “Keep the Faith” Introduction: Jesus will meet us on the road of desperation. The story begins with a man who worked in the church, but was concerned about the church being too ritualistic to help his serious problem. He knew that if He called on Jesus, He could help, but would the help come too late? I. In Distress: Christ is willing (vs. 21-24): His daughter is at the point of death, Jairus was at the point of desperation. A desperate home needs the presence of God. It’s not enough to just know what goes on at church, but I need the presence of Christ in my home. Jairus was settled that he would rather have had that than to hold on to his position. Remember that Christ is willing. II. In Delay: Christ is working (vs. 25-34): The people are thronging Jesus and a woman breaks through who has suffered a prolonged sickness. Jesus teaches us that: 1. Other people are looking for Jesus too, and 2. We must be patient because He knows we need Him too. This woman was desperate enough to break through. Jesus wanted Jairus and others around Him know that just because He was blessing others didn’t mean He wouldn’t bless Jairus too. III. In Deliverance: Christ is watching (vs. 35-36): Jesus wants us to know it’s never a bother for Him to help us. Just as it looks like there was nothing left to hope for, Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.” Jesus is watching to see ...

We must be patient because He knows we need Him too. This woman was desperate enough to break through. Jesus wanted Jairus and others around Him know that just because He was blessing others didn’t mean He wouldn’t bless Jairus too. III. In Deliverance: is watching (vs. 35-36): ChristJesus wants us to know it’s never a bother for Him to help us. Just as it looks like there was nothing left to hope for, Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.” Jesus is watching to see if you will allow yourself to go into despair. He doesn’t want you to worry about all the bad news being reported all around you, just keep the faith. Don’t give up the faith that has brought you this far. If I know that God is going to make a way for me, all I have to do is believe. Be preoccupied with God’s word.  The devil doesn’t care about what you do, as long as you stop believing in the promises of God. But Jesus says, I know what he said/she said, but I am the Life. Conclusion:or feel it, you can expect it.Even if you can’t see it  A Word for 2010: is going home with you, so you1. Prevailing Thought:I’m so glad that Jesus knows what I’m going through. This year, I will let my faith carry me into all the promises God has for me and my family.
December 27, 2009: Sunday Morning Worship Scripture Reference: Judges 10:612:7 (key: Judges 11:29-31) Topic:  “Receive What You Need For Christ ” mas Introduction: was a lot of baggage to There11 begins blunt, direct, and simple.  Judges unload from such a small suitcase. Jephthah was a great man with suspicious origins. I. His family relationship was a mess: His mother was a prostitute and his father was a philanderer who fathered a child outside of his marriage. He brought the child home through a series of circumstances, but the family endured: 1.) They dealt with it. 2.) They lived it. 3.) They overcame it. Once Jephthah and his brother grew up, his brothers found out he was a half-brother not born into the family in the traditional way. The brothers looked at Jepththah as someone who would inherit their father’s inheritance, so they dr Jephthahove him away. Then hooked up with some rowdy guys. But because the people of Ammon were coming after the Gilead people, the elders of Gilead went to look for Jephthah to help them fight. But they knew they didn’t have too much room to make a deal with him with these tough guys on his side. What Jephthah had that his brothers didn’t have was the Spirit of the Lord. You got through this year not by your might but by the Spirit of the Lord. (Zach. 4:6). II. He even made a mess of his great victory:It’s one thing to bargain with man but you can’t bargain with God. What we say to God has overtones of bargaining for a guarantee of an expected result. We begin to think that this is the kind of “spiritual” deal God would want to make with us. Butany kind of bargaining with God cheapens your relationship with Him. The promise Jephthah make may seem noble, but had his daughter been praying for her father’s safe return while Jephthah was making his bargain with God, who’s prayer would God answer? Jephthah prayed and promised the first thing to come out of his door upon his return. But Jephthah had borrowed ways of his neighbors that were not of God. We should never make deals with God because what we say to God is, I’ll give You what You want, if You give me what I want. III. His life was a mess to the end:   the end of the year, it doesn’tAs we come to have to end this way. You may have made a whole lot of bad decisions that would cause you to play the victim, but God says you don’t have to play the victim…you’ve got grace! It doesn’t have to end in sorrow. As long as God is on the throne, it doesn’t have to end this way. There is a balm in Gilead (Jer. 8:22, Gilead in Greek means, “a tribe,” “ egion,” or “mountain top.”) Although  r Jephthah did not always make the right choices, he was remembered in Hebrews 11:32 as one of God’s faithful servants. Conclusion:Grace happens.I won’t live one more year making New Year’s deals with God. Let me repent, so I don’t fall back into what tripped me up last year. His
grace is sufficient. (Zach. 4:8) “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit…” Let God decide your battles. Prevailing Thought:for me to make bargains with God, He’s given meThere is no need grace so that I can count on Him for victory in every circumstance.  December 20, 2009: Sunday Morning Worship   Scripture Reference: John 5:1-8   Topic:  “Receive What You Need For Christmas”   Introduction:   What’s on your list for Christmas? This man at the pool represents those that are hopeless and those that are helpless. He had been by the pool a long time.   I. Discouragement (John 1:1-5): What God wants to do for you does not require the assistance of others. Every year, this man got more and more discouraged about whether or not he would be healed. He was in a place of mercy and yet he couldn’t find any. After all these thirty-eight years, something good should happen. Jesus asks the man by the pool if he wants to be made whole. What a question to ask someone in this condition! However, some people are content with being in misery right where they are. The man said he didn’t have anyone to help him into the water when it was stirred by the angel.was trying to get him to a place where he didn’t need anyoBut Jesus  ane. What blessing in the midst of his discouragement. Jesus did for him what no one else could do.   II. Desperation (John 5:5-8):What we need the most is for Jesus to step into our lives. The gifts people give are wonderful, but what we need the most is for Jesus to be the center of our lives. Christmastime has traditionally been a time where we give someone something because they are giving us something. Jesus owes us nothing, yet He gave Himself out of His own kindness and expects no such gift in return. Jesus told the man to get up and walk in the presence of other people watching what was happening. Jesus put him in a position to carry what was carrying him. If this man had gotten all he wanted all his life, he might not have ever met Jesus. Meeting Jesus is the best thing that could ever happen to you. Jesus decided the message the people around needed to learn
was what grace and mercy looked likewalking. It’s good to be overlooked where you are now.condition and don’t worry about moving anywhereDon’t worry about your present Jesus will stop by where you are.   III. Discovery (II Cor. 9:15):   Just eight words, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (Rom. 5:8)While we were yet in our sins, Christ died for us. (Luke 7:47)How do you explain forgiveness you do not deserve? was Itgracethat saved me and delivered me.I can’t describe all that Jesus has done for me. What the world needs is a Savior that can save you from your sins and save your soul. I’m so glad I have a Savior!“Unto us is born a Savior…” is worthy to talk about.  It’s worthy to proclaim that what is born this day is “a Savior who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2)  Prevailing Thought:The gift of eternal life with Christ and forgiveness I do not deserve cause me to walk as a testimony of God’s grace and mercy.   December 15, 2009: Bible Study   Scripture Reference: Luke 2:15; Matthew 13:17   Topic:  “How Far Is It To Bethlehem?”   Introduction:   distance Thedistance has been measured by the spirit of a man.The doesn’t matter, but what is in your heart. We will consider here what ways the different groups of people made their trips to Bethlehem. We want to look at what was going through their hearts and minds. There were those who were lost in thought, but wise in their discernment. Those closest to the birth, were the furthest away from understanding. Those who were much further away and found out about Jesus’ birth, found out by divine intervention.   I. The Shepherds (Luke 2:15; Matt. 13:17):It was revealed to them what could not have been known. They were considered outcasts, unwise ones. They were not those who were supposed to be knowledgeable about spiritual things. They were led by divine intervention.
II.         The Astrologers (Matt. 2:1):They saw a star in the East. human By calculations, they figured it would make more sense to find Jesus in Jerusalem. They figured the more rational place for Him to be would be a typically holy place. But we miss itchurch on Sunday than in the park or onwhen we figure He’s more likely to be at a corner someplace on a Monday. But someone who is looking at the name “Bethlehem” spiritually will recognize that Bethlehem means, “House of bread.” The Bread of Life would then come to be born in the house of bread.   III.        Herod (Matt. 2:3):He was a terrorist of the people and was now trying to find out where the baby Jesus was so he could destroy Him. His scribes and priests told him this would be the Christ who the prophets spoke of. When Herod gathered the wise men to him, they mistakenly volunteered too much information to him about where Jesus might be. So Herod tries to find Jesus by employing his astrologers to find out exactly where He was. Herod has evil intentions and therefore could not find Jesus. It’s not the distance, it the condition and intentions of the heart. Bethlehem is too far for some people because it’s a pilgrimage of the heart.  It’s finding thetruereasons for wanting to come to Christmas.measured according to the heart because it’s aThe distance is spiritual journey. The shepherds came and worshipped Jesus there in the manger the night of His birth. The wise men came later and found Jesus after He was settled with his parents at home as a young child or toddlerJesus must be found in faith, repentance, and through tears as a way of expressing your love. The closer we get to Christmas, the more we need to be in church.   Conclusion:Many have bore the length to see God in Christ as a pledge of their love. All of God’s feelings of love, hurt, and tears were there in Bethlehem. This world today is drunk in its own pride and self-indulgence.It’s not about what you’re about to get for Christmas, but what you’re about togive. We are missing the innocence of Christmas because the world has become so cynical. We take on confusion and misguidance and can’t even get to the joy Christmas should bring.  It’s not the traveling distance in miles, but the real distance is measured by the spirit of a man. Bethlehem is a long way off, but have faith, stay repentant, and cry to find Jesus. Prevailing Thought:Those whose hearts are truly focused on worshiping Jesus this Christmas will surely find Him.   December 13, 2009: Sunday Morning Worship
Scripture Reference: Matthews 1:21   Topic:  “The Revolution of Christmas”   Introduction: is a time of spiritual expectation, evaluation, and spiritual Christmas renewal. All of the material things are one thing, but there should be something more knowledgeable about Christmas in you. What God asked Mary and Joseph to do was beyond reason. Have you ever had to ask God for anything extraordinary? What kind of convincing did God have to do to convince them of thinking beyond reason? God talks to Joseph in a dream and sends an angel to talk to Mary. He also gives Mary her own cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist, to praise God with her (Luke 1:39-45). When you hear the word of God, is there something that leaps in you? Is there life in your womb that brings excitement to your life? This is not just another fuzzy Christmas story; it’s a time to evaluate. A revolution is being born.“His name shall be called JESUS…” is a revolution in itself. When I hear the nameof Jesus, I hear “Merry Christ-mas.” You may hear a whole lot of names, but the nameJesusis the one that marks revolution and celebration.   I. Acts 3:6:  Peter declares to the sick man that he couldn’t give him any material gift, but what he could gift him with is healing power.   II. Acts 3:12: PeopleAt the name of Jesus, is how the man was healed. will walk in faith they didn’t know they had.   III. Acts 4:13-31: (vs. 17)Spread no further the name: The rulers, scribes, and priests were trying to discourage the apostles, but they didn’t listen. (vs. 18) Don’t speak or teach the name. (vs. 30)Let them see the power of Your name.   IV.        Acts 5: 17-42:(vs. 28) Don’t teach in His name. (vs. 41)Count it worthy to suffer for His name. (vs. 42) was an honor for the ItThey kept teaching and preaching. apostles to preach the word of God. Even after all they went through, they kept preaching the word. You’ve got to keep on, in spite of the persecution.
Prevailing Thought:When I hear the powerful name of Jesus, my soul rejoices!   December 8, 2009: Bible Study   Scripture Reference: Luke 1:46-56   Topic:  “Mary’s Song”   Introduction:  song of revolution is as quiet as it is certain.Mary’s  It is inward and radical; spiritual and enduring. It is the fulfillment of a prophecy actually growing inside of her. (vs. 46-47) -Her song is devotional (“my soul”), emotional (“my spirit”), and confessional (“my Savior”).know you have a spirit because you are devotional,  We emotional, and confessional. What is your confession? Do you confess Christ at Christmastime?   I. Mary reacts with worship (vs. 46-47):It took Mary four days to even get to her cousin Elizabeth who was also pregnant with John the Baptist. On her way there, she overflows with worship. She realizes that there is something growing inside of her that is due to change the course of history. This is revolutionary. She is not to be worshipped as other religions have practiced because in Luke 2:42, Elizabeth calls Mary blessed among women, not above. Even Mary herself confesses the Lord her Savior. When wemagnify the Lord, we confess that the Lord is getting larger and larger, bigger and better in my understanding. A revolution is something that overthrows and turns upside-down the course of history. The closer the revelation, the more excited I get.  What will your devotional experience be? Will you get excited about the spiritual part of Christmas?Mary didn’tjust have joy, she wasoverjoyed traveled all the. Mary way to Elizabeth’s to let her know how excited she was about the good news she was carrying. The good news is inside of you.   II.         Rejoice in the God who surprises:Some of us will not worship at Christmas because it’s not deep enough in your soul and spirit. We must This Christmas is for us. understand what the prophet Isaiah meant in Isaiah 9:6. Before Mary even to Elizabeth, her soul magnified the Lord. The surprise is that God has looked passed the privileged of society and looked to someone like me.It’s a surprise that God would use my testimony
to help someone else.Mary wasn’t worried about what people would say about her or what Joseph would think. When you realize God has placed something revolutionary inside of you, you realize it’s time to celebrate Christ and rejoice in His power to save.  This is a life-changing experience.   Prevailing Thought:God has placed something revolutionary inside of me; I must run and tell someone else how He changed my life.   December 6, 2009: Sunday Morning Worship   Scripture Reference: Luke 2:28; Matthew 2:18 (ref. Jer. 31:15)   Topic:“Surviving Christmas”     Introduction: We must wish those who are suffering, the brightest Christmas possible. We need to be sensitive enough to recognize that not everyone is able to receive the joy of Christmas like those around them. Many people suffering with tragedy try to destroy the good news of Christmas. What word do we have for those in such mourning as Rachel was? People are dealing with loss of every kind. Then there are others who are anxious and suffering with bad doctor’s reports, job loss, and divorce. While we are looking at what sized T.V. we will get, others are just wondering how they will survive. What can you say to Rachel’s weeping?not the fact that she was The saddest part is weeping, but that she refused to be comforted. I. The character of those who wait for Christmas: (Luke 2)Simeon is led by the Spirit of God to the temple. He had come many times before but now was able to embrace Christmas; the manifestation of his hope. He embraced the Consolation of Israel. This is a time when we really do receive Christmas. You will only have as much of Jesus as you intensely desire of Him. What spirit ledyou It was theto Christmas? Spirit that revealed the Savior to Simeon. After embracing Jesus, he praised God. He declared that all was well in his life. Is there a sense of well-being when you embrace Christmas? Do you have any spiritual expectations? II. The comfort of those who wait for Christmas:Simeon declared that just having Jesus there with him gave him comfort. Where is your comfort or peace? If you are anxiety-driven you will never have peace. What can I do to promote Christ in my family? Will we pray before we eat; before we open our gifts? Simeon knew all he needed was to get a fix on peace; his deliverance. Simeon saw his salvation in its
infancy. There’s nothing more comforting than actually seeing what you had faith to believe in. III. The concern of those who wait for Christmas: My concern is that I walk in the mindset of the consolation I have received. When you have Jesus Christ, you have the Comforter.  Prevailing Thought:It is important to be sensitive to those who are hurting this Christmas and minister to them Jesus, the manifestation of their hope.   December 1, 2009: Tuesday Bible Study  Scripture Reference: Luke 2:14, 25-32; Psalm 84  Topic:  “The Desire for Christmas”  Introduction:  It doesn’t get any better than this for Christmas. The best gift God can give is peace.gifts you get if you don’t have peace. It doesn’t matter how many  It may be going through, but I still feel happy. It’s when the word and the revelation of God defy logic.God being so good that everyone around you is inIt’s one thing to hear about awe, but it’s another thing to experience His goodness for yourself.  I. Psalm 84:longing for the tabernacle, where David would meet God.This is a This longing creates in you a place to get back to the friendly and familiar. (vs. 6) When those who walk with God pass though the Valley of Baca, they still find an oasis. David had a longing to be in this place again. Miracles are not just the generation of power, but the revelation of truth.commercialism; it’s the revelation of GodIt’s not the that should excite us about Christmas. You have as much of God as you intensely desire of Him. What is a Christmas gathering if Christ is not even acknowledged? Nothing is worse than missing an opportunity to minister.              Make sure theyWhen you give a gift or card for Christmas, put a scripture inside. know that this gift is an extension of God’s kindness:  “To you, from me…a gift.”   II.         Luke 2:25-32:man named Simeon was led by the Spirit of God to meetA Christ. Only the Spirit of the Lord will lead you to Christ. What began as a quiet quest and desire for the Consolation, turned into a cry of declaration and affirmation. Simeon made an affirmation that let him depart in peace. All of his doubts were put away when Jesus was brought into the temple. God brought us into the fellowship through Jesus Christ.
(James 4:8) near to you…” We live in a day and“Draw near to God and He will draw time where those special moments and reverences of the season have been lost. There are things that come against Christmas that try to defeat the joy of it. Will you embrace Christmas the way Simeon did? Not by the demonstration of power, but by the Spirit of truth. It was at this revelation that the shepherds came (Luke 2:14). You would not find Christmas unless the Spirit of God brings it to you.  Prevailing Thought:My desire this Christmas must be for the revelation of Christ; for my peace and the peace of my loved ones.   November 29, 2009: Sunday Morning Worship   Scripture Reference: Luke 2:14; Psalm 29:10   Topic:  “Christmas is Coming, I Will Trust God”   Introduction:   “Glory to God in the highest” is the highest thought man can have (Luke 2:14). Peace on earth is the best gift God can give, and goodwill toward all mankind is the most man can receive. Be sensitive to the fact that not everyone is jolly this time of year. One way or another, we all go through storms.   I. God speaks to your storm (Psalm 29:10-11):Your storm may not be here now, but it’s coming your way. Even if you just got out of one, you are bound for another one sooner or later. But God will speak to your storm. God sits on His throne. Although there are storms hovering above, God is never below your storm. God sits up high and reigns as King over your storm. He is King before the storm, during the storm, and He will be King after the storm.             (Mark 4:35-39)The disciples are in a storm. are riding on a boat and They Jesus is sleeping.Jesus woke up, He didn’t say anything to them, but HeWhen spoketo the storm. You may feel overwhelmed and depressed, but you had better remember Jesus is in the boat with you. He already said they were going over to the other side (vs. 35). So if Jesus said it, youcan’t go under, you won’t drown.
II. God speaks to you in a storm (Psa. 29:3):He speaks to people who are trying to find peace in the things of the world. God speaks and He is over many waters. We don’t concentrate on the storm, but the voicein Histhe storm. voice isabovethe negativity and all the hustle and bustle of the crowd. In all the clamoring, I hear God and feel the true meaning of the season.God has not abandoned you this season; it’s just your time to go through the storm.Everyone may have abandoned you, but don’t worry about what people do, it’s just your time to be tested. God is teaching us to be sensitive to those who are going through storms right now, so we can prepare to experience our own storms when they come. But when we remember to listen for the voice of God, we will be able to ride out our storm much easier.   III. God will speak to the storm within (James 1:6): We are in our storm and don’t know what to do, but we musttrust(Phil. 4:6-7). I got to my God for all I need. He sits on His throne and reigns in my life. There’s no reason to be sad and depressed; just say Iwilltrust God.  Prevailing Thought:The storms I must go through will subside when I trust God to reign in my life and encourage others to do the same.   November 24, 2009: Tuesday Bible Study  Scripture Reference: Galatians 3:1-2; Romans 8:11   Topic:  “The Spirit to Win”  II Timothy 1:7: it in your spirit that you are aGod did not give us a spirit of fear. Get prevailer; a champion.   John 6:63 It is the Spirit that gets you the win.   Romans 8:11- The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead will raise you up.
