Description
The economic interests of the members of the Roman elite (the senators, the knights and a part of the municipal elites) and the ways in which they used to run their estate, have been much debated during the last thirty years. After having criticized a few aspects of such debates and pointed out several methodological precautions which are to be taken, Jean Andreau questions on a definition of the elite and makes observations on the various economic sectors outside agriculture. He streses that the interests of the members of the elite vary from one sector to the next, but were important in several sectors. Their interventions could take different shapes, which mean a more or less strong entrepreneurial commitment.
