District Vision

Vision for Science
• All students will be actively engaged throughout the PK-12 continuum of studies in the

Audit Recommendations to Support the Development of the Science Vision

• Implementation of a PK-12 cohesive and engaging continuum of studies to impact the
achievement of elementary, middle school and high school students
o Foundation for science study established in a refined, detailed and consistent K-5
standards-based curriculum across all three district elementary schools to facilitate a
smooth transition across the continuum
o Increasing rigor and interdisciplinary studies reflected at the middle school level to
facilitate preparation for high school

• Independent Study for Middle and High School Students
o Expands the study of science topics, involvement with local science research
and/or participation in science competitions or fairs

• Establishment of a District Science Education Forum
o All district students will benefit from the communication and collaboration of
K-12 educators, administers and community members that will comprise a
forum to meet regularly to discuss critical issues related to science
education

• Summer Enrichment Programs in Science
o Expanded program of tuition-based programs of study to engage students in
supplemental learning, provide greater diversity of science topics available for
research and study and additional opportunities for students to grow as inquiry-
based learners
o Summer enrichment course for students to further explore the scientific method,
data analysis, graphing and lab report construction
• Science Curriculum and Lab Support
o Science students within the district will be able to better study and practice science
with labs and investigations supported by the purchase of necessary materials to
build curriculum kits K-5 and equipment for the expanded life science program at
the High School

• Professional Development
o Summer teacher training institute for constructing elementary science units and
exploring best practices to support the implementation of the aligned elementary
curriculum

• K-12 Environmental Education Program and Educator (.5 teacher)
o Provides students throughout the district with opportunities to interact, learn
together and engage in real-world science as they study local and regional
environmental issues. The educator will seed science content and studies at all
levels that will serve as a cohesive focus for district science education

• Science Educational Assistants
o Dedicated use of the currently assigned Educational Assistants in the elementary
science labs will support the hands-on lab investigations used to supplement and
cover core content standards

• Grading System for Science in Grades 4 & 5
o The assessment of Science in the same manner as Math and English will bolster the
emphasis of science in the curriculum and strengthen feedback to students

• Action Plan – Next Steps
o Ensures all the tenets of the audit are implemented and that new ideas are
incorporated into instructional practices
