Organisation
During the past year the Board of ITAL and the Comité de
Gestion of the Association EURATOM - ITAL have "been in
session three times and once respectively. Again one of
the major subjects of discussion has been the future of
the Association, which of course is closely related to
the future of EURATOM within the European Community.
No definite decision was taken "by the council of ministers
of the Community. EURATOM has been given one to two years
time to reorganise its research centre into a modern and
efficient undertaking. This means that the budget 1970 of
the Association is the same as that of 1969·
Part of the work - projects related to health protection -
will be for 50$ financed by the six countries, whereas the
rest of the program - agricultural applications - will be
for 50$ financed by the three countries Italy, Germany and
the Netherlands. The other 50$ of both parts of the program
is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
The scientific advisory council of ITAL has been in session
twice and advised the ITAL Board of Governors to continue
the existing activities and to approve the 1970 program of
the direction and staff.
This means that in the area of 'Improvement of Food Production'
the work will again concentrate on the possible use of induced
mutations for improving the quantitative traits in a number
of major food crops and to improve qualitative traits in high
yielding varieties by changing specific characteristics.
Furthermore the work in this area deals with the nutrient
requirements of good varieties of plants, specifically with
respect to the quality of the resulting food product.
Emphasis has been put on obtaining a better knowledge of the
transport, uptake and accumulation of nutrient elements and
radioactive contaminants in soil and plants. The problem of
harmful residues is also receiving attention. In these studies
the nuclear methods and mathematical models have proved to be
irreplaceable and are therefore being continually improved.
In the area of 'Prevention of food losses' major emphasis has
been placed on the use of radiation to increase the shelf life
and to decontaminate food products. As the method has proved
to be feasible for a number of products, commercialization
through pilot plant operations has begun.
Over the last few years attention has also been given to the - 2 -
use of radiation for the genetic control of insect pests.
